No space, no books, no clue at NYC’s worst elementary school

Students at PS 106 in Far Rockaway, Queens, have gotten no math or reading and writing books for the rigorous Common Core curriculum, whistleblowers say.

The 234 kids get no gym or art classes. Instead, they watch movies every day.

“The kids have seen more movies than Siskel and Ebert,” a source said.

The school nurse has no office equipped with a sink, refrigerator or cot.

The library is a mess: “Nothing’s in order,” said a source. “It’s a junk room.”

No substitutes are hired when a teacher is absent — students are divvied up among other classes.

A classroom that includes learning-disabled kids doesn’t have the required special-ed co-teacher.

About 40 kindergartners have no room in the three-story brick building. They sit all day in dilapidated trailers that reek of “animal urine,” a parent said; rats and squirrels noisily scamper in the walls and ceiling.

And the principal — Marcella Sills, who joined PS 106 nine years ago — is a frequent no-show, sources say.

Sills did not come to school last Monday. On Tuesday, she showed up at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, The Post found her at home in Westbury, LI, all day before emerging at 2:50 p.m. — school dismissal time. Wearing a fur coat, she took her BMW for a spin.

She showed up at school Thursday, but not Friday.

When Sills, 48, does go to work, it’s rarely before 11 a.m. — and often hours later, say sources familiar with her schedule.

“She strolls in whenever she wants,” one said.

The school hasn’t had a payroll secretary in years.

-snip

When she is out, an assistant principal is left in charge. Yet Sills, who gets a $128,207 salary, also pockets overtime pay — $2,900 for 83 hours in 2011, the latest available records show.

The critics are just all racists. The principal is obviously a victim of the current war on women. If the taxpayers would provide an additional $100,000 per kid, this problem could be solved. But things are looking up. It will all be fixed now that Bill de Blasio is mayor.

Any "parent" who knows about these conditions and still voluntarily sends their baby off to "skool" is no parent.

I laughed out loud when I read “rigorous standards” of Common Core...

I'm currently on a business trip in CA. I was sitting in a restaurant the other day people watching as I waited for my lunch. A family was seated near me -- 2 grandparents, a mom, and a little boy -- about 8 or 9. They were pouring over a text book called "California Math" and a work sheet. I could only hear snatches of the conversation, but the title of the book told me volumes (pun intended.)

The women and the child were clueless. Grandpa was trying to figure out the problem, and he was objecting to the way it was stated. I could tell that granpa was no dummy, but somebody had turned simple math into an epic struggle. At one point he vented his frustration and raised his voice so that I heard, "But 'rounding up' 420 does NOT give you 450! This is not right!" And "Estimate? Why are they estimating? This is stated all wrong!"

I watched them struggle for nearly an hour and thought to myself that the whole problem is in the book. "California Math", indeed!

Thanks, Randy Weingarten, for your inspiring leadership! The unions DON'T CARE ABOUT STUDENTS, as long as they get theirs.

Gee, based on the school 2014 budget they get $259,020 this year for "Special Education Services"

This school is operating exactly as intended. The politically connected staff have well paying jobs for which no real work is required. They pump up their enrollment in order to get federal Title I subsidies and the money can go into some political slush fund somewhere. For most of the “parents”, their children are out of the house and out of mind for most of the day allowing them to go to work, entertain boyfriends, sell drugs, or whatever their hearts desire. And best of all, someone else is paying for it.

With the new mayor of NYC, this school will become the model for all of the others to emulate. It’s all part of the Leftist nirvana. What’s not to like?

May I offer what I believe is a simple solution? I may? thank you.

Ms. Sills (lovely coat by the way!) may I suggest this:

Contact a Mr. Peter Lanza. Now he won't be easy to find or reach but you may be able to contact him through a Mr. Robbie Parker. You can find him listed in the Actors Guild.

Ask Mr. Lanza if his 'son' Ryan is available to come to your school and pretend to assassinate oh say 30 students or more.

Now, now I know what you're thinking. Your bros, your homies, Barry and Holder won't like this, but I assure you you are wrong. They'll love it. So you get the NY State Police to set up a fake shooting and then you make sure to get some really good amateur actors and then invite Wolf Blitzer, Katie, and Anderson Cooper (tell him to remember to bring all of his nose this time) and I believe that within just a few short months you'll be receiving a check from Gov. Cuomo for about $50,000,000 to build a new school.

$50 mil!! You'll even be able to afford a real mink!!! So good luck and good shooting. Remember though!! NO SURVIVORS!!!!!!! They're just loose ends you can't afford!

How many thousand $/student is the average in NYC.

Multiply that number by the number of students in this school.

Subtract $100,000 for each teacher and $10,000 to heat/cool and maintain each class room.

The result will probably be like any public school in our nation. Hundreds of thousands of $’s for each classroom that magically disappears before it gets to each classroom.

I don’t live in NY, but I homeschool and am in homeschooling groups with people who homeschool in NY. Apparently it’s really difficult to homeschool in NY. I think the low income low education low information parents here would never be able to get through the homeschooling requirements. But yeah, I can’t imagine what goes through a mother’s mind when she knows about those conditions and then sends her child to that. Except, my guess is that the conditions are not all that much better at home. I think this is all by design. These people are dependent on the government.
