Moscow (AFP) - Russia's powerful Orthodox Church proposed Friday a referendum on banning gay relations in the face of Western pressure over human rights ahead of next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi.
The Church's abrupt intervention came amid a growing debate over whether the Kremlin should mount a firmer defence of traditional values that many in the overwhelmingly conservative country view as coming under attack from Europe and the United States.
Church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin pointed to polls showing more than half of Russians viewing homosexuality as either an illness or a crime as a sign that the country was ready to revert to a Soviet-era homosexual ban.
"There is no question that society should discuss this issue since we live in a democracy," Chaplin told the online edition of the pro-government Izvestia daily.
"For this reason, it is precisely the majority of our people and not some outside powers that should decide what should be a criminal offence and what should not," he said.
High-profile global celebrities and sports stars have already urged athletes attending the February 7-23 Olympic Games on the Black Sea coast to show their support for Russia's lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender (LGBT) community by flashing protest signs.

Their call came after President Vladimir Putin last year signed fast-tracked legislation making it illegal to "promote" same-sex relationships in front of minors.
Chaplin -- an outspoken but also influential Church figure who airs weekly shows on state TV -- claimed that most countries viewed homosexuality as a crime....

If everyone who was born with the illness of “gay” were to obey God’s command and offer it up for the salvation of his soul, we would be living in peace instead of turmoil.

Being born Gay is an illness. Think about it: If a man were born with no legs would he be right to demand that NO ONE have legs?
Of course not! But he would be right to ask for help. The Gays, instead, insist that everyone join them in their illness.
You notice how none of these reports ever talks about the SUPPORT the ban gets from Western people. The fact is, a lot of Westerners agree wholeheartedly with Putin and the Church that homosexuality is an illness and a crime.
So if you’re reading this, Vlad, hold the line. Let the pantywaists whine (it’s about all they do anyway). You’re right. They’re wrong.
They will argue they just want the same rights as those with 2 legs, but not being able to walk is not immoral, nor is being homosexual mean you must act it out. What they want to do is equate a nonmoral aspect like race with a behavior, an immoral one that they want to make as normal as having two legs, and foster that among all, from infancy and up.
The prevalence and sanction of this would not have been possible except for the sexual revolution and moral decline , in which fornication lost its shame and became a right, and which the Pill enabled, with homosexuals demanding equality, and all together being more destructive in the long term than an bomb that has yet exploded in the US.

What is it with gays and their determination to let their sexual orientation run their lives? It’s always about their orientation. They can’t seem to do anything other than plan their lives around their orientation.
No one wants to hurt them, no one wants to mess with them, and no one wants trouble for them, but they are causing messes and trouble just because they are addicted to being victims all the time.
Read the Bible and it will inform you. In a short summation... homosexual sin is only one of two sins called an Abomination unto GOD. These people are already damned by their demented actions. They are under the control of satan... they are compelled to spread his evil and his plan for the destruction of GOD’s vision and that is why they are always in your face and forever advancing satan’s war against GOD. They can repent and be gifted with salvation.
As if it was like breathing. And upon which they justify acting out their orientation, and demand affirmation of it. And since the orientation of man is to sin, by which logic we can also justify acting out whatever we feel inclined to do.

We who are Christians want their repentance and salvation, and to live lives honoring God. And even on the purely temporal level, sodomy is primarily responsible for the death of a half a million Americans, and 79% of all new HIV cases. It can hardly be considered to be loving if we do not seek to turn people away from something that usually results in a greatly increased incidence of infectious diseases and premature death, sending them to an early grave and an eternal hell
What is the other sin? Interesting how homosexuality is considered an abomination, one of only two.

Indeed, and which is why homosexuals have spend some much effort trying to negate the condemnation of sodomy and even find sanction for the same. Which wresting of Scripture is worse than than sodomy, as evil as that is, because it removes authority by which it is condemned.
