Huh, I thought they imported most of their oak, didn’t know they had much of it there. I timbered my property a few years ago and all the veneer quality white oak and walnut was bought at the standing auction on site by a Japanese importer. He had to buy all of it, but everything of lower quality he let a local lumber company harvest at a much lower bid price.

JD is still American-owned as is Woodford Reserve, Old Forester and Early Times. They are owned by Brown-Forman.

He paid nearly $8k for a single white oak tree, that better be some damn fine drums or barrels of whiskey at that price!

This is a defensive move for them. They need to diversify out of the yen before the yen loses its value in the next few years.

Actually a good move. Booze should hold it’s value, along with oil and ammo.

I tried their 12 y/o Hibiki during New Years. Thought it was very good. Better be at 47 euros that worked out to be about $75 a fifth.

Suntory was high end stuff when I was there in 67.

I can’t imagine drinking Beam hot out of little tiny
glasses though.

” Jim Beam and Makers Mark now to be sold on Tokyo sidewalk vending machines. Craziest thing I saw when I was there in 1990, beer as well.”

Those days are gone . But now that convenience stores are ubiquitous , open 24/7 , and have a wide selection of booze , one can always get a drink .
