Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tx) says he is optimistic that some sort of immigration reform can be considered and possibly approved by Congress this year.
But Cornyn told 1200 WOAI news it won't be the 'comprehensive' type of immigration reform that the White House is demanding.
"Particularly after the failure of Obamacare, the people are very skeptical of thousand page bills," Cornyn said.
He says there is talk among Senate Republicans of a 'bit by bit' approach, which could include an expansion in the visa program for people who attend and graduate from college in the United States.
"People who go to our colleges and universities and then because of the cap on H1b visas, we send them home," he said.
Several Republicans business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is calling for immigration reform, claiming many industries from agriculture to high tech, cannot find enough trained workers.
But the issue is a mine field for Republicans like Cornyn. Tea Party conservatives like U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) who is running against Cornyn in the March primary, will attack any attempt to loosen immigration laws as 'amnesty' and say groups like the Chamber are only interested in allowing more low wage workers into the country four businesses to exploit.
Stockman for Senate! or Vega! or Stovall! or Mapp!
Cornyn betrays us to the bitter end!
2014 - Cornyn retirement not out of the question.
Cornyn is with Rubio that the GOP should be the party of massive legal immigration.
In August he said the house should fall into the trap.
“On Friday, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) told Laura Ingraham that the House should pass a piece of immigration reform and bring it to a conference with the Senate.”
“The Senator said the alternative is the status quo which is terrible. Ingraham agreed, then compared going to conference to meeting with the Mafia.”
He agrees with Rubio but is facing a primary and the bill already had 60 votes.
The US needs Comprehensive Enforcement.
If you're a principaled Texas independent, consider registering as a Republican just to vote against Cornyn in the primary. You'll feel good afterwards.
whoops. Hit the wrong button.
principaled -> principled
It, “Immigration Reform”, is a done deal, it just hasn’t happened yet. A clue should be top anyone with eyes to see is the transferring of funds [benefits]from the military [veterans] to the illegals. And both Parties are agreeable to this. The die has been cast.
Cornyn is a RINO POS! First, he proudly boasts that he and Lindsey Graham will sponsor a bill to essentially codifiy Obama’s Executive Order that vastly broadens the definition of “mentally incompentent” for purposes of denying people the right to own a firearm, and now this.
Texans, PLEASE send this Texan McCain (arggh, the very thought makes my skin crawl!) back to Texas in the upcoming primary. He no longer actually represents us - so let’s make it official!

I’m voting anti incumbent in every election I can get my hands on. Voting against Cornyn and Pete Sessions. That’s the only way we will ever be able to term limit these RINOs that are the reason why the country is like it is. Helping the liberals every chance they get.
Cornyn is starting his campaign for the Hispanic vote.
he won’t get my vote
McCornyn can kiss my ass and go to hell.
I will be supporting STEVE STOCKMAN, 100%!
“The die has been cast.”
You may in fact be right. However, we just need to stop immigration reform from passing today. Then tomorrow, same thing. Just get past the next recess, and the next and the next and then the summer, etc.
With each passing day, the election comes closer and closer. Reid is having a hell of a time with unemployment and the membership of the house is watching and keeping their pulse on the people. They’ll want the other guy to vote for immigration reform, but not them. And despite Boehner hiring a McCain aide, it’ll be a tough sell in the House.
One day at a time, one extra call at a time, one extra email at a time, one extra primary at a time.
Yeesh, what a tool.
There are two key prerequisites that the DC establishment is willfully ignorant of when it comes to immigration reform.
1. Convince the people that any reform will be enforced.
2. Listen to Americans when they say what they want from an immigration system.
These two points keep any reform from happening, as most are convinced that immigration reform is something that will be done to them not for them, and any enforcement provision are not worth the paper they are printed on.
Excellent choice!
Politicians do whatever they want to after an election because they assume that we will hold our collective noses and vote their sorry butts back in, come the next election.
Hence, voting to “Throw The Rascals OUT!” might mean fewer Republicans in Office, but what difference does it make when they cave in to Democrats anyway?
I’ll take my chances with a strong vocal Minority, the likes of Cruz and Lee for example, giving voice to what I know to be in the best interests of America.
Keep talking!
