OTTAWA — A Gatineau, Que., man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder after savagely beating his wife and stabbing her in the face with a broken beer bottle in front of stunned guests at a wedding.

Jorge Mejias Sanchez, 49, attacked his wife, 36, at a reception at Chateau Cartier on Aug. 25, 2012. He punched her and struck her with a chair and table centrepiece.

He took off and guests called police, who took statements from the wife and witnesses.

Officers then went out looking for Sanchez while his wife stayed behind at the reception.

Police didn’t find him, but he came back to the reception just after midnight and stabbed his wife in the face with a broken beer bottle.

Guests were able to restrain him until the cops returned to take him away. The woman was taken to hospital with serious wounds to her back, chest and mouth.

The Crown and defence have asked for a nine-year prison sentence.

Was he the one getting married or were they just guests? The article does not say.

Good thing they didn’t make it to the honeymoon... They both probably would have had a rough time of it

I wonder what set him off like that? I've seen some couples get mad at each other when they get carried away with the cake cutting. This is one of the craziest wedding stories I've ever heard. Who smashes a chair and centerpiece over their new bride's head and then stabs her in the face with a broken bottle? I wonder if he hit the bottle on something to break it.

I think that amber-colored fluids may have been involved, perhaps in copious volumes.

Very unusual name in the Gatineau Quebec area. Cyr, Leblanc, Boudreau, Robichaud, Martin are far more common.

Looks like just another illegal alien to me.

Alcohol doesn’t make you do or say things you don’t mean. It drops the barriers that keep you from saying or doing the things you want to do but are suppressing. That said, If I want to beat the crap out of a woman, why do I marry her?
