As for paying for what amounts to a cotillion, a responsible parent would just say no. Get like-minded parents together and have nice day at the local park if they want to celebrate the end of the year. Bring chips, sodas and a frisbee and save that $110 plus formal wear costs to put a month’s food on the table.

The prom is a throwback to the days when graduation from high school represented the student’s entrance into the adult world. At one time, it was a dignified affair at which teenagers put on their best manners and presented themselves as ladies and gentlemen.
