UMCP may be latest school to cover sex-change surgery

Students at the University of Maryland, College Park could have the cost of sex-change surgery covered by their health insurance next school year, joining a nationwide trend of private- and public-sector employers offering the benefit.

Insurance firms vying to cover the roughly 3,100 students who use the university health plan have been asked to structure proposals to cover sex reassignment surgery. The university expects to choose an insurance provider for the 2014-2015 school year this month.

Transgender-rights advocates say that because surgical gender reassignment is so rare, offering the benefit comes with minimal cost and could be a powerful recruitment and retention tool.

"Even just the possibility that students could obtain these services goes a long way toward providing a welcoming campus," said Joe Ehrenkrantz, the Student Government Association's diversity director.

Fifty universities across the nation and hundreds of Fortune 500 companies cover sex reassignment surgery — a trend that gathered steam in the past decade amid a growing acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the U.S.

That acceptance, bolstered by changes including the legalization of same-sex marriage in more states, set the stage for college students to ask for the surgery coverage, said Anand Kalra, of the Transgender Law Center in Oakland, Calif.

It’s Merry-land, after all.

WTF??? Its rare but a powerful recruitment and retention tool ??

Are our sexual identities (personalities) all at risk at any time? We could wake up anytime feeling like we were born the other sex?

I been noticing this with Democrats, they learned to make up claims that their policies that charge us for give-aways to the few really helps us too.

Maria Shriver is working that one now too. She Claims that scores of employer mandates that give stuff to women employees really help men too.

Powerful recruitment tool, for what?

This is military strength Kool-Aid. Touting that they DON’T do this would probably get more enrollment, in this day and age! “We believe in sanity at our school!”

In years to come, I see confused, angry people who have made disastrous choices in their youth taking deadly revenge on those who encouraged/abetted those disastrous choices.

It's elective surgery!

What would have been satire a short time ago is now reality.

If insurance co's cover sex-changes, then they should cover ALL other types of plastic surgery. Ridiculous.

They will cover the sex change surgeries for the mentally ill. But if you fall and break your hip at 60y and 1d, you will be SOL.

This is madness, isn’t it? Now we have to pay for sex change operations? Can’t people who are doing this pay for their own darn surgery???

MooseBurger, maybe they consider the five-fold increase in suicides AFTER sex reassignment surgery to be a plus?

"A 2010 survey from the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force found that 41% of transgender people attempted suicide at one time". http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2012/02/21/Survey_41_of_Transgender_People_Attempted_Suicide/

Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, says,

"Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behavior, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group." http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0016885

"There is no conclusive evidence that sex change operations improve the lives of transsexuals, with many people remaining severely distressed and even suicidal after the operation, according to a medical review conducted exclusively for Guardian Weekend.

The review of more than 100 international medical studies of post-operative transsexuals by the University of Birmingham's aggressive research intelligence facility (Arif) found no robust scientific evidence that gender reassignment surgery is clinically effective.http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2004/jul/30/health.mentalhealth

Suicide studies show that 90% of attempts are the result of undiagnosed and/or untreated psychiatric and psychological disorders as the real cause of suicide and attempted suicide. (I.e. they didn't do careful diagnoses of underlying psychiatric problems because they assumed gender reassignment would "fix it all".)

"Sex change" (actually sex-maiming) surgery is massively cruel to these confused and suffering patients.

If they’re doing it for “recruitment and retention” it might become not so rare. I want a nose job and breast implants. Will they cover that?

And if they do that, plastic surgery prices will reverse themselves and go straight to the moon!

I saw a clip about this last night on the Baltimore news. There was some fool representing the school who said that this policy will help the school with recruitment and retention.

What?! How many freaks do we have clamoring for this self-mutilation? And why would any school want to attract them?
