Associated PressJanuary 14, 2014 Updated 9 hours ago APATZINGAN, Mexico Federal forces and heavily armed vigilantes are warily watching each other in a violence-wracked farming area of western Mexico after one deadly clash and a failure by leaders from both sides to work out a deal on disarming.

"Police sent in from outside don't know where the criminals are," Lopez said. "We know of 10 warehouses where they are hiding armed men; they (federal police) aren't going to find them.""
Wow. Even the priests are with the vigilantes.
Good on ‘em!
The corrupt government wants to disarm the vigilantes so that they will be at the mercy of the drug lords who are buying off the government. Is Mexico run by the Democratic Party?
Maybe they would sell us a few of their leaders.....
I believe it was an annonymous vigilante force which brought down the Pablo Escobar criminal army in Columbia.
I prefer "citizens with the God-given right to defend themselves and their families", but I guess that's too much for a newspaper to use instead of the word "vigilante".
The term vigilante did not start out as a pejorative. It derives from the vigilance committees in California (I believe SF) who formed when the government could not or would not act against criminals. They were initially seen as a good thing but IIRC developed a bad name when leaders of the committees started carrying out personal vendettas. While I agree that your description is accurate I also think the term vigilante is appropriate. Perhaps these good folks in Mexico can restore some honor to the word and tradition.
Reminds me of a scene in VIVA ZAPATA in which the peasants have won the war, the politicians have taken over, and are being disarmed. Then the Army attacks them.
The police have been bought off by the cartels, and everyone knows it.
Let me rephrase this. In VIVA ZAPATA, The Peasants have won the war and are being disarmed, they are then attacked by the army as the politicians have taken over.
umm, actually goes back to Roman times. Google vigiles
For the past several YEARS, the Mexican gov has done nothing to help these villagers against the drug gangs. Now that the villagers have armed up and defended themselves against the cartels, the gov shows up and tries to disarm the villagers? And anybody can’t guess who’s side the government is on?
DEA, Sinaloa Cartel in Secret Cooperation for Years
Uncle Scam runs the big drug cartels in Mexico just like it runs Al Qaeda in Syria.
The Mexican federalis are disarming the locals at the behest of the big drug cartels and Uncle Scam. Uncle Scam does the same thing in this country. It protects the criminal class and tries to disarm the decent citizenry.
If Uncle Scam and the Mexican Federalis weren't partners with the big drug cartels they could take them out in a week. All they have to do is use the NSA to find out who the cartel guys are and kill them.
Thank you for the clarification.
I hope the folks are successful in protecting their kith & kin.
Very interesting that the Mexican government is more interested in disarming the people rather than disarming the cartels sucking the lifeblood out of the people.
How about “Regulators”. That’s what they called the armed citizen groups in the Carolinas that stood up to colonial government corruption prior to the Revolutionary War.
i personally like the term, “militia”.
“Regulators”
That’s a good one...I like it.
