Dropping Like Flies: Third House Dem in Three Days Calls it Quits
TRNN ^ | 1/16/14 | Matthew Burke

what is viewed as a rush to the exits in the face of the Obamacare disaster and the Obama scandal machine bleeding into the 2014 mid-term elections, three prominent democrats in the U.S. Congress have announced their retirement this week.

On Monday, 40-year Capitol Hill veteran and Pelosi Democrat, George Miller (D-CA) called it quits. Miller, 68, has been in the House since 1974, the year of Watergate. Miller stated that he looked “forward to one last year in Congress, fighting the good fight and then working in new venues on the issues that have inspired me.” Miller also indicated that he was especially proud of” passage of national health care reform.”

On Tuesday, New York Democrat Bill Owens pulled the plug. Owens was vague in his excuse, stating that, “It is time for me to undertake new endeavors and spend more time with my family.” Owens came into office in 2009 after winning the well-publicized NY-23 special election. In 2012, Owens won re-election in the newly formed 21st congressional district, winning against Republican Matt Doheny by only two percentage points, 50% to 48%.

Then on Wednesday, Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) jumped ship announced his retirement. Moran explained little, simply stating “it’s time to close this chapter of my life and move on to the next challenge.” Moran is seen as one of the most abrasive and antagonistic members of Congress. The leftist Moran has been no stranger to his own scandals, or as Roll Call reported, “his professional accomplishments were sometimes overshadowed by personal scandals.”

This week’s announcements by Moran, Owens and Miller join other House Democrats, including Mike McIntyre (D-NC), and Jim Matheson (D-UT), who have also announced that they will not seek re-election. The exits of the congressional democrats is likely tied to their belief that 2014 offers little hope in their gaining majority in the House of Representatives.

I’m not sure it matters - so three girls from one useless clique leave and three girls from another useless clique take their place. Both cliques hate the unpopular (i.e. conservative)kids equally. Worse in my mind is the clique that uses the unpopular kids votes to maintain power and then use that power against those same unpopular kids.

IIRC, there was a similar exodus of incumbent House 'Rats prior to the 2010 elections. Hopefully this series of departures will be a prelude to election trends similar to 2010.

Of all the 'Rat dropout announcements in this cycle, the one today by Jim Moran should be celebrated the most by FReepers! He's one big sleazebag that won't be missed come next January.

I think so, but it does no good to repopulate the senate with McCains. We lost ground in 2012, not just because we didn’t defeat more Dems, but because the Rs we put in were in some cases like Jeff Flake-—a mini-McCain.

Indeed, I hope so.

Several Republicans in competitive seats are quitting too, Runyon, Gerlach. A good year would mean we’ll likely hold them.

True!
My first reaction was : what gossip is going around congress to create this atmosphere of “getting out while the getting is good”?

Iow what don’t they want to be a part of?

Well, I think on the one hand that NONE of them really want to repeal Obamacare, except Cruz, Lee, and Jim Jordan and a handful of others. Part of it is this Washington culture that says you can't "repeal" anything they once passed. After all, it's the law. Part of it is that they don't want to be on the wrong side of the media blitz that will come at them if/when they do get serious about repealing Obamacare. Some of it is that there are a few RINOs who are in bed with the docs and insurance companies.

But they know this is a disaster of the highest magnitude, up there with the Sherman Silver Purchase Act that caused the Panic o 1893 and the Smoot-Hawley Tariff that helped plunge us into the Great Depression. So they don't see a way to win long term.

I’m not sure that THEY and smart enough or educated enough to know the magnitude of the fiasco.
More then likely just don’t want to be one of the group that is not popular with the Cool Media Type.
Pockets have been filled , perks put in place and they’re headed to a rich retirement ! No need to be involved with overtly questionable activities

I live in Moran’s District, regrettably. Only the face may change; possibly not even the name. Moran’s brother is an ambitious pol who at one time was also mayor of Alexandria and later ran for the D nomination for governor.

Yep - Buck McKeon from Santa Clarita is one of 'em.....and the only reason he's held the seat through the last few squeakers was his familiarity -- his seat will go 'Rat this November.

The RNC will read their “victory” as a “mandate” to do Dem-lite legislation and shove Beltway BS down our throats.

I say kick out the GOPe in 2014. Absolutely no difference now and Dem control.

I doubt it. All of Cali is trending rat but this is still a Republican seat and 2014 is not looking like a good year for rats.

Obama (who ran very strong in Cali, most our House candidates in competitive seats did much better than Romney) lost the district after narrowly winning it in 2008.

McKeon won by 10 points in 2012 after the remap, not a squeaker. I don’t know how new the district was for him but in 2010 he won his old seat with over 60%, far from a squeaker.

Sort of like being the most racist Klansman. Or the most sexist radfem. Or the cruelist liberal.
