KANSAS MIDDLE SCHOOL: POSTER LISTING SEX ACTS PART OF 'HEALTH AND SCIENCE' CURRICULUM

The father of a 13 year-old girl who was upset by a classroom poster that listed sex acts was shocked to hear that the poster is part of her school’s health and science curriculum.

Breitbart: As local Fox News affiliate in Kansas, fox4kc.com, reported Tuesday, Mark Ellis said his daughter, a student at Hocker Grove Middle school in the Shawnee Mission School District, was “shocked” by what she saw on a poster on a classroom wall in school. Ellis said his daughter took a picture of the poster and showed her parents.

Originally, Ellis assumed the poster to be a student prank, until he called the school and discovered it was part of the curriculum.

Parents outraged over classroom poster that lists sex acts... “Why would you put it in front of 13 year-old students?” he asked.

The poster, entitled, “How Do People Express Their Sexual Feelings?” lists sex acts such as: Oral Sex, Sexual Fantasy, Caressing, Anal Sex, Dancing, Hugging, Touching Each Other’s Genitals, Kissing, Grinding, and Masturbation.

Ellis said after being told by the school principal the poster was “teaching material,” he is now concerned about what his daughter is being taught in school.

“It upsets me,” he said. “And again, it goes back to who approved this? You know this had to pass through enough hands that someone should have said, ‘Wait a minute, these are 13-year-old kids, we do not need to be this in-depth with this sexual education type of program.’”

According to Fox News, however, district spokeswoman Leigh Anne Neal said the poster must be viewed in the context of a bigger curriculum, which she identified as abstinence-based for students in middle school.

“The poster that you reference is actually part of our middle school health and science materials, and so it is a part of our district approved curriculum,” Neal said. “However the item is meant to be part of a lesson, and so certainly as a standalone poster without the context of a teacher led discussion, I could see that there might be some cause for concern.”

Neal added that the curriculum is similar to those used by other schools around the country.

“The curriculum it is a part of, it aligns with national standards around those topics, and it’s part of our curriculum in the school district,” she said.

In fact, the curriculum, titled “Making A Difference,” is published by selectmedia.org and recommended by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) as a “pregnancy prevention intervention.”

According to the publisher's website, the goal of the program is:

...to empower young adolescents to change their behavior in ways that will reduce their risk of pregnancy and HIV or other STD infection. Specifically, this curriculum emphasizes that young adolescents should postpone sexual activity and that practicing abstinence is the only way to eliminate the risk for pregnancy and STDs, including HIV.

Module 2 of the program, which is called “Understanding Adolescent Sexuality and Abstinence,” offers “an overview of reproductive anatomy, discusses messages about sex, discusses how people express themselves sexually [apparently reinforced by the poster], and the benefits of abstinence.”

According to HHS, in the original study that explored the effectiveness of the Making A Difference program, the participants were African-Americans, aged 11-13.

Nevertheless, Ellis thinks the curriculum should change.

“This has nothing to do with abstinence or sexual reproduction, actually, a lot of these things,” he said. “I would like to see that this particular portion of the curriculum is removed from the school.”

As Fox News reported, Ellis said if the curriculum doesn’t change, he will remove his daughter from sexual education classes.

Sick and getting sicker. And not a damn thing we can do to stop it. It is impossible to isolated kids from the sickness in America, no matter whether you homeschool or not. You can do only the best you can do instilling old time morals but that does not protect kids from the government.

“How Do People Express Their Sexual Feelings?”

When I read that I thought, yeah, that IS how people express their sexual feelings.

But without any context, the guy who exposes himself on the subway or rapes children is certainly "expressing sexual feelings".

Good lord, EVERY sexual feeling is not good, NOR should be "expressed"

No wonder this was posted in a public school.

Wouldn't want the gym teacher to "feel bad" about touching kids in the locker room.

It is child abuse to subject children to this kind of sexual perversion.

Parents need to get their pitchforks and torches and show up at the school board ready to scare the begeezus out of these child abusers.

It's always after the fact. Why aren't parents monitoring what their children are learning beforehand?

I watched over my daughter's work like a hawk, and taught her how to always ask questions and be skeptical of what she was learning. The mother and I finally pulled her out of school and now she learns at home, taking self-paced online courses.

Public school is not only a sham, it's an anachronism. Kids simply don't need to go to school anymore when technology makes it easier to stay at home and learn.

I see “talking” appears twice as often as anything else...which does have some truth to it. Especially if extended to “lying” and “bragging”

Why should the father be upset?

Don’t all students get sex education at school these days? Some of it may be too explicit for the little ones but that fact should be discussed at the PTA meeting.

No wonder kids are messed up today.

Sexual expression is GOOD when the teacher comes to class dressed as the opposite sex.

If you are uncomfortable, then you're probably some weirdo "Christian fundamentalist".

But when the teacher touches you or "expresses" themselves, the teacher is fine.

Now if a 6 year old boy kisses a girl then there is no tolerance at all.

Suspension and possible expulsion.

A boy hugs a teacher? Expulsion and gnashing of teeth.

Teacher blows a boy in the parking lot?

Well, is the teacher a woman? If good looking, no problem. If she's ugly, then throw the book at her.

Male teacher?

The community needs to understand "tolerance" in such a case.

Most important, does the teacher receive full pay and pension? Pending a ten year "investigation", of course.

I'm completely confused myself.

The internet for the most part unleashed this upon our children and parents should not be naive concerning what their children are exposed to.

Nearly all kids now have smart phones and there is no telling what types of porn they have accessed and shared with their peers,

Might as well offer some sort of education to offset what they are likely to be getting into via porn sites.

“How Do People Express Their Sexual Feelings?”

I express my sexual feelings by punching worthless public school administrators in the face.

There probably is, that was just a paper on the wall, not the whole program.

It’s my job to teach my little girl what something like this is, and give her the confidence to speak up about it not to the teacher, but to her friends.

We just have to be smarter and faster than them. She’s only 6, but I was told she stood up for the fat kid in her class when he was getting picked on.

I won’t pull her out and home school her. I want her to make a difference using her big mouth. I’ll support her.
