A condemned man appeared to gasp several times and took an unusually long time to die - more than 20 minutes - in an execution carried out Thursday with a combination of drugs never before tried in the U.S.
Dennis McGuire's attorney Allen Bohnert called the convicted killer's death "a failed, agonizing experiment" and added: "The people of the state of Ohio should be appalled at what was done here today in their names."

I don't know the ins and outs of legal execution but so many people OD every day, effortlessly, that I don't understand why it's so hard to carry it out during an execution.

It’s classed as inhumane. Firing squad is quick but you can’t do that anymore either.

The cheapest, quickest, most effective and down-to-earth all-American way would be firing squad.
Everything else is just gimmickry.

It’s his family. They were present. It doesn’t say how old his daughter is.

Reports in the European press said his death took 15 minutes..the AP seems to have inflated the time. I’m sure the official time is more like 5 minutes.
To: bramps
He couldn’t do much with that 24 minutes.

I recall hangings at Fort Leavenworth still going on about 1960.

With everything available, why not just put someone out as if for surgery, then administer whatever drug makes it permanent. Done.
To: DJ MacWoW
LOL, 25 minutes? I guess those 20-something years of appeals he got don’t count.

I don't know. His family wants to sue for cruel and inhumane but:
state Assistant Attorney General Thomas Madden had argued that while the U.S. Constitution bans cruel and unusual punishment, "you're not entitled to a pain-free execution."

Yeah, if I ever end up in that situation I’d rather have a firing squad. 30 cal rifles, tell ‘em to aim for my head. Blink and you’re gone.
