Rep. Sensenbrenner pushes bill to update Voting Rights Act (RINO)
The Washington Times ^ | January 16, 2014 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 01/16/2014 7:37:00 PM PST by jazusamo

Key lawmakers announced a rewrite of the Voting Rights Act on Thursday, creating a test to judge which states are still so discriminatory that they need federal scrutiny of their voting decisions — moving to revive the iconic law just months after the Supreme Court declared part of it unconstitutional.

In their June decision, the justices said Congress couldn’t use discrimination from four decades ago to single out states for special federal scrutiny, so the proposal would update the test to look at recent federal court rulings that found a state or municipality violated voting laws.

~snip~

Hans A. von Spakovsky, senior legal fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, called the bill “an absolute disaster” and said it would write race-based criteria into one part of what had been a race-neutral law.

“For the first time, Sensenbrenner’s bill actually says that the protections of this amendment will only apply to racial minority groups, and they defined them in the law, and it specifically excludes white voters,” Mr. von Spakovsky said. “They’re basically giving a ‘get out of jail free’ card to black elected officials in the South, where they can discriminate all they want against white voters.”

The bill includes a new definition of “persistent, extremely low minority turnout.”

Mr. Sensenbrenner and his fellow bill authors, Mr. Leahy and Rep. John Conyers Jr.

Eric Holder has to be delighted to have Sensenbrenner join Leaky Leahy and Conyers joining him, 0bummer has to be pleased also.

John Conyers must be really upset that we’re getting voter fraud under control in Michigan and they couldn’t even keep the white guy out of the Mayor’s position in Detroit.

“which states are still so discriminatory “

I didn’t know there were still states that didn’t allow blacks and women to vote.

One problem with using Census data for checking voting discrimination these days is that there are too many areas with a large percentage of noncitizens.

This is a potential improvement over what we had, by the way....not that the deal still can’t be bad.

RINO Sensenbrenner wrote GWB’s “Patriot Act,” which made Obama’s NSA the Holy Terror that it is today.

What kind of insanity inspires a Republican to revive the trashy, blatantly unconstitutional Section V of the, so-called, Voting Rights Act?

Yes, I know Sensenbrenner is a RINO, but I can't imagine why even a RINO would deliberately give this power to this Justice Department... I mean, we don't even need to imagine a JD that's controlled by radical left wing monsters, we actually have one... And the Civil Rights Division? A nest of vipers even without Obama's cop-killer lawyer appointee to head it up...

Unless you've lived under these draconian laws, you might not know what it's like to have to go to Washington and get their approval every time you change a polling station.

And to co-write such a bill with Conyers?

Just when you think you've come to grips with the Liberal tactic of using our own division and outrage as a weapon against us... here comes someone in the Republican Party presenting further evidence that Constitutionalists have no political party...

No, can't wait at least until there's a Conservative heading Justice... What's the pay off Sensenbrenner?

RE :”Rep. Sensenbrenner pushes bill to update Voting Rights Act (RINO)”

This one is a long term pet peeve of mine.

Sensenbrenner pushed the re-authorization of VRA in 2006 with GWB and GOP house and GOP Senate as is, months before getting creamed in that election .

That means that Bush signed this law passed by GOP in 2006 that included punitive voting rules restrictions on a handful of states, all Red conservative states. That meant that those conservative states had to get permission from Holder before enacting any new voter ID laws.

After Obama was re-elected, by some miracle the SCOTUS struck those provisions down that shackled those conservative states.

And here comes RINO Sensenbrenner again to help Dems put them back on.

Hes a senile old bastard

GOP needs to be looking at ways to disenfranchise the parasite class, not stack the deck against white people.

Couldn’t agree with you more. This has been a crusade with Sensenbrenner for several years, he should retire.

Absolutely disgusting. The Supreme Court helps us out for a change and some Republicans want to overrule them and reinstate new race-based liberal tyranny. We need these morons out of the party.

The sort that would cause them to push Romney: they do not stand for what they say they do.

I listened to the Great One on my drive home during this presentation. He's absolutely correct, although I disagree that the coup is "gradual."

In five short years, he's undone much of the work of over two centuries of patriots. My only question is, when 20 January 2016 arrives, do you really expect Obama to relinquish power?

Oh? Is there a problem? For two days now I have been arguing with “conservatives” about how the GOP and it’s lesser evil BS have to be flushed.

Well, I have been told that I support Obama when I oppose crap like this because the dem is worse. But maybe I’m just tired. Can someone refresh my memory about how voting for idiots like this is good for America again?

Cuz I just ain’t seeing it. Nor am I seeing how the Dem doing it is in any way worse.
