Ohio killer's execution takes almost 25 minutes
Boston.com ^ | January 16, 2014 | ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS

Posted on 01/17/2014 5:58:49 AM PST by Freelance Warrior

A condemned man appeared to gasp several times and took an unusually long time to die — more than 20 minutes — in an execution carried out Thursday with a combination of drugs never before tried in the U.S.

McGuire, 53, made loud snorting noises during one of the longest executions since Ohio resumed capital punishment in 1999. Nearly 25 minutes passed between the time the lethal drugs began flowing and McGuire was pronounced dead at 10:53 a.m.

Executions under the old method were typically much shorter and did not cause the kind of sounds McGuire made.

Prison officials gave intravenous doses of two drugs, the sedative midazolam and the painkiller hydromorphone, to put McGuire to death for the 1989 rape and fatal stabbing of a pregnant newlywed, Joy Stewart.

The method was adopted after supplies of a previously used drug, the powerful sedative pentobarbital, dried up because the manufacturer declared it off limits for capital punishment.

The execution is certain to launch a new round of federal lawsuits over Ohio’s injection procedure. The state has five more executions scheduled this year, with the next one Feb. 19.

A 12ga shell of buckshot in the back of one's head from 15 feet works much better in the both time and effiiency dimensions. It's also way cheaper and readily available. Why all this hassle?

I dunno - the loud snorting noises indicate to me they're on the right track.

I say they need to keep working the lethal drug angle until they find something that takes a full 8 hours, and includes more writhing in the meantime.

The Chicoms use a 7.62 x 39mm in the back of the head from about 3 feet. Sounds much more humane than what is described above.

Joy Stewart would be 47 years old today and her son, almost 25.

Her family told our Katie Ussin they miss her dearly.

The statement reads in part:

“She never got to realize her dreams, never got to hold her baby boy in her arms, never got to kiss his soft cheek.”

I thought journalists claimed that "there as are two aides to every story".

So what about the details about the brutal murder that landed that guy in the gurnee?

...If they’d match the amount of killin’ time to the amount of time that this poor woman suffered would be appropriate IMO.

If one looks at his crime, killing a 7 month pregnant woman after sodomizing her 25 years ago, the only humane treatment I can think of is to place him along with the woman’s family behind closed doors for a few hours.

Would that suffice on the humane side?

Either way works for me.

I have no problem with the condemned having to hang there for a while to contemplate their demise.

If done in public maybe some other poor soul will think twice about doing the same thing.

Right!

A much more appropriate concern is “how long did this jerk’s victim suffer”. That answer X 10 would be OK for the perp.

Then again it might have been cool for them to stop, wake the perp up and restart again the next day, just to give him time to think about it.

The method needs to be the exact same method the perp used.
If it was a gun then lock him or her in a room and have a hole just big enough for a rifle barrel then tell them that sometime within 24 hours shots will be fired. Make em sweat. . . Eye for an Eye. . . . .

The Silent Killer

“Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that can kill you
quickly. It is called the “silent killer” because
it is colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-
irritating. If the early signs of CO poisoning are
ignored, a person may lose consciousness and
be unable to escape the danger. More people
die from carbon monoxide exposure than any
other kind of poisoning. “

Air tight room. Replace oxygen with inert gas, prisoner goes to sleep permanently. Body parts are reusable, if prisoner wants to donate.

I think this would require too much from prison personell. So many methods are to be administered.

I dunno, a heart which has fibrillated is unlikely to be worthy, IMHO. A brain torn to pieces with buckshot isn't worse: noone donates a brain while other organs are intact.

What was wrong with hanging? Cheap and efficient.

But what bothers me is that there is absolutely no way to execute someone without causing them pain. Probably the besst way to ensure lack of physical pain would be two large caliber bullets into the head at close range. A little messy, but minmal pain to the execcutee.

There is still the mental and spiritual anguish of knowing that at X o’clock Monday morning, or whenever, you are going to die.

Bring back hanging.

I don't think that it would be inhumane for this rapist/murderer of 2 should suffer any less time than his victims.

This method costs too much.

Now, our court system has unequivocally declared (via Terri Schiavo) that the entirely humane way to terminate life is to withdraw water. Since we have already detirmined that is the proper method lets go with dehydration.
