Ohio killer's execution takes almost 25 minutes

A condemned man appeared to gasp several times and took an unusually long time to die — more than 20 minutes — in an execution carried out Thursday with a combination of drugs never before tried in the U.S.

McGuire, 53, made loud snorting noises during one of the longest executions since Ohio resumed capital punishment in 1999. Nearly 25 minutes passed between the time the lethal drugs began flowing and McGuire was pronounced dead at 10:53 a.m.

Executions under the old method were typically much shorter and did not cause the kind of sounds McGuire made.

Prison officials gave intravenous doses of two drugs, the sedative midazolam and the painkiller hydromorphone, to put McGuire to death for the 1989 rape and fatal stabbing of a pregnant newlywed, Joy Stewart.

The method was adopted after supplies of a previously used drug, the powerful sedative pentobarbital, dried up because the manufacturer declared it off limits for capital punishment.

The execution is certain to launch a new round of federal lawsuits over Ohio’s injection procedure. The state has five more executions scheduled this year, with the next one Feb. 19.

A 12ga shell of buckshot in the back of one's head from 15 feet works much better in the both time and effiiency dimensions. It's also way cheaper and readily available. Why all this hassle?

I dunno - the loud snorting noises indicate to me they're on the right track.

I say they need to keep working the lethal drug angle until they find something that takes a full 8 hours, and includes more writhing in the meantime.

As long as the cleanup crew comes from death row.

The Chicoms use a 7.62 x 39mm in the back of the head from about 3 feet. Sounds much more humane than what is described above.

Joy Stewart would be 47 years old today and her son, almost 25.

Her family told our Katie Ussin they miss her dearly.

The statement reads in part:

“She never got to realize her dreams, never got to hold her baby boy in her arms, never got to kiss his soft cheek.”

I thought journalists claimed that "there as are two aides to every story".

So what about the details about the brutal murder that landed that guy in the gurnee?

I call that "Rapid Elevation Deprivation".

...If they’d match the amount of killin’ time to the amount of time that this poor woman suffered would be appropriate IMO.

If one looks at his crime, killing a 7 month pregnant woman after sodomizing her 25 years ago, the only humane treatment I can think of is to place him along with the woman’s family behind closed doors for a few hours.

Would that suffice on the humane side?

A short drop with a sudden stop works well too!

You must have meant the long drop which fractures a condemned's neck.

Probably, but the 8th amendment bans this.

As long as the cleanup crew comes from death row.

Well, with 20 years long waiting terms one can find enough condemned people for this job.
