Prosecutors say a former minister at First Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., charged with his wifes murder, was trying to leave the country prior to his Jan. 1 arrest to marry his boyfriend.
The latest twist in a story that has received worldwide media attention came Jan. 16 in a bond hearing for Richard Shahan, 53, who resigned recently as children and families pastor and facilities director at First Baptist, reportedly to head overseas for three years of mission work in Europe and Central Asia.
Prosecutors said information gleaned from more than 3,000 of Shahans e-mails indicate he was planning to leave the United States for good, ultimately moving to the United Kingdom.
"He planned to become a citizen there and begin a new life with his boyfriend ... who he intended to marry," Deputy Jefferson County District Attorney Leigh Gwathney said, according to the Birmingham News. "He had no intention of ever returning to the United States. He had no home to return to and he had said his goodbyes to his family."

Art Linkletter had it right...people ARE funny.
You have to wonder that no one ever noticed that there was something wrong with the guy. How was he able to stay in a position of authority.
Granted, you may not know the depth of the problem if he hasn’t yet snapped. But most people have some radar for weird.
In what decade of his short life did he discover he was not attracted to women?
Probably kept up appearances to fatten his bank account before doing the deed.
Let me guess... a mega-”church.”
Check out the picture with the story. It looks to me like maybe this guy has already started hormone treatments...??
It could be he has just lost a bunch of weight recently, but....
The two are not mutually exclusive.
Liberace was in a decades long homosexual relationship, yet also continued to cavort with prostitutes in Amsterdam most of his life.
Brother - bad advice!
Be prepared to toss your lunch after checking out the photo. Just nauseating.
Why kill his wife rather than just obtain a divorce? Other than narcissism.

The First Baptist family is saddened by the news and circumstances surrounding the murder of Karen Shahan. We trust and pray that truth and justice will prevail.
The church was founded in 1872 in BHM, AL. It is affilated with the SBC. It moved to its current location during the 1980s. It is a large church. My SWAG would be an ASA (average Sunday attendance) of 400. It would not fall in my claissification of a "mega-church", i.e., non-denominational, arena worship hall, praise music accompanied by an electric band.
You’re right, 400 average Sunday attendence, is not “mega”.
Thanks for the clarification.
