Hell, Romney couldn't even get all the Reagan Republicans to turn out for him. The man's a Democrat with an R velcroed to his sleeve, and too many people knew it.

Cruz had ads for the primary vote on May 29, 2012, but not in the numbers like Dewhurst.
Palin was also featured by Cruz in robo calls prior to primary day. Palin came in
for a runoff appearance on July 27 at The Woodlands. Polls during the latter part of
the primay were showing Dewhurst around 40% and Cruz around 30%, thus a runoff appeared inevitable.

I agree that the money dynamics changed. Dewhurst had endorsements from Perry,
Dan Patrick, Jerry Patterson, Tom Leppert 3rd in the primary, and others but
Cruz prevailed with a more grassroots support.
