Judge names monitor to oversee Arizona sheriff in profiling case

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A veteran lawman who oversees embattled police departments in Detroit and Oakland was appointed on Friday to monitor the operations of a controversial Arizona sheriff whose deputies had racially profiled Latino drivers.

Robert Warshaw, a former police chief in New York and North Carolina, was appointed by a federal judge to enforce a sweeping court order against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a prominent but divisive figure in the national debate on immigration reform.

A federal judge ordered Arpaio in May to stop using race when making law enforcement decisions, in response to a lawsuit that tested whether police could target unauthorized immigrants without profiling U.S. citizens and legal residents of Hispanic origin.

The resolution of that case requires that a court monitor be appointed to oversee the work of Arpaio, who calls himself "America's toughest sheriff."

Illegals and supporters have their way we shall be like Mexico .They are making our laws weaker and weaker. This ruling will make the Mexican drug cartels very happy they will drive with ease down our roads and interstates and will use race card for why they were pulled over .

A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you’re talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who’s gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all F’in’ night. ~ Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci Casino)

The federal government holds no sway over a Sheriff.

Sheriff Arpaio was elected by the people of Arizona. Who the hell does this “judge” think he is? This bastard has overstepped his authority. Our so called judicial system is totally out of control. A clown from Detroit in Arizona? ROTFL! Maybe he should go clean up Detroit before he worries about Arizona.

Yes, stop using race when enforcing illegal immigration on the Mexican border...

So stupid-it hurts!

This isn’t going to end good for the guy from New York, especially in Arizona.

Because Hispanics are almost never here illegally.

They don’t need him in Detroit either. They have a good police chief now who I suspect would get along just fine with Joe Arpio.

You’d better stay off Joe’s case. What he does works! What you do, judges and Obozo stooges do is weaken his success.

You’d best be careful because if someone like me is elected president either he or Judge Napolitano becomes AG!

Sounds like the court order said “do not enforce the law if the perp is a member of a protected class.”

Personally I fully expect to be racially profiled in some Detroit neighborhoods and I would welcome it as a common sense measure.

If you see a white guy in a rough black neighborhood, chances are the cracker is up to no good.

“If you see a white guy in a rough black neighborhood, chances are the cracker is up to no good.”

I was going to make the same point. If the police tried to harass me based on my race alone (white guy going into a rough black neighborhood), that wrong, but how often does that occur? More than likely, they’d simply start observing me more closely.

Wrong race in a black neighborhood would be just one reasonable suspicion, and experienced police are probably very, very good at detecting other suspicious traits, everything from my facial expressions, how I’m dressed, to what I’m driving. Nevertheless, they still require probable cause that I have done a crime.

All profiling does is help them better narrow their focus. One Hispanic male driving a nice car down the highway? Probably not worth further interest. A clearly overloaded van with a couple Hispanic males driving inland from the boarder? Maybe that needs a bit more scrutiny.

“Oh, no!” some would say. You aren’t supposed to notice the driver’s race! I think that’s ridiculous, because it flies in the face of reality. #1 How in the world can someone NOT notice race? #2 Why in the world is it unreasonable to at least note Hispanic race if one is trying to find illegal aliens near the border?

One case where police in Detroit checked me out was last summer in the Delray neighborhood. (The worst of the worst)

Police didn’t stop but they did slow down to look. However I was a middle aged white guy with a locally known black pastor and a known local elderly person. It raised enough of a flag to get their attention but didn’t raise enough flags to warrant further investigation.

a prominent but divisive figure in the national debate on immigration reform.

Enforcing the law without kowtowing to political correctness is 'divisive' among members of the press.

Is there also a national debate on laws against bank robbery and auto theft?

http://www.pewhispanic.org/2011/02/01/unauthorized-immigrant-population-brnational-and-state-trends-2010/

“As of March 2010, 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the United States”

Then see Figure 2 at
http://www.pewhispanic.org/2011/02/01/ii-current-estimates-and-trends/

Do the math, roughly 63% of illegals are Mexican.

The main article is at the first link. Be sure to check the Appendices.
