China building its own aircraft carrier: party official

Taipei, Jan. 18 (CNA) The first aircraft carrier built entirely by China is being constructed in the northeastern city of Dalian, a Communist Party official said Saturday, confirming for the first time that the Chinese are building the vessel from scratch.

Wang Min, party secretary in Liaoning Province, made the disclosure during a meeting of the provincial people's congress, according to the online edition of the Chinese-language Takungpao daily in Hong Kong.

Wang told the delegates that the aircraft carrier is being built in a shipyard in Dalian and is expected to take six years to complete, Takungpao reported.

Wang also reportedly said that the Chinese Navy will operate at least four aircraft carriers in the future.

The Chinese Navy commissioned its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, in September 2012 but the vessel was rebuilt in Dalian based on the hull of a former Soviet vessel first launched in late 1988.

There have been several reports about China building its own aircraft carriers but so far, the Chinese defense ministry has neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

I wonder if it is nuclear powered.

There’s info about the Chinese getting the plans for the Ulyanovsk which was to have been a nuke.

Be a pity if it had to burn coal or heavy grade oil to keep it fired. Think of the carbon footprint....

Not that the Chinese military would give a flying whatever how big that carbon footprint might be. They do not have to answer to any “environmentalists”.

But nuclear power would certainly give them great leverage in patrolling the ocean, being unnecessary to refuel for years at a time, and fuel storage would be relatively compact. The used rods? Dump them overboard.

Or maybe they will go to a thoroughly modern molten-salt thorium reactor, which has a MUCH smaller nuclear waste product. And is completely practical as a power plant.

They can steal plans and build all they want. What they don’t have are experienced crews to make these carriers effective warships. Simply cannot obtain the eighty years of carrier experience and know how of the American Navy

Given the massive and growing military budget they’re playing with (~$200b), I expect a nuclear-powered non-ski jump carrier. Ultimately, it comes down to money - if you have enough of it budgeted, you can figure out everything from the ground up.

They must have found the plans for a cvn next to the f-35 plans that they hacked

Bad idea. CVs are “old” technology.

They should be looking into building UCAVs and UCAV support ships. It isn’t like they can’t buy or swipe the technology...

I have a hunch that they are not nuclear powered. That puts them at a strategic disadvantage. Destroy their oilers and they become stationary floating targets.

Re post 7: you got that right. They will not reach the level of USN aviators for decades. They do not have the experience that allows them to train their pilots to the highest standards.

I get the jist of your message ... they hope, not us. I fully expect that it will be the same junk they send over here. The question is will our elected leaders fear them and conduct foriegn policy out of fear or from a position of strength. We once fear the Soviets and since then it has been proven that they were wanting in quality materiel and quality command and control. That pansy President from GA didn't believe in American exceptionalism and he basically wanted to unilaterally disarm America based on the fear of the soviet horde. It took Reagan years to rebuild confidence that should have been their all along.

Are they actually going to out aircraft on this one? They’re sort of missing the point with the one they have now.

This story is taking years to unfold. Call me when this thing leaves the yard, it its Russki steel plates have not rusted through by then.

Meanwhile, the Celestial Laundrymen are said to be assiduously practicing STOL and wire trapping exercises at a remote airfield (and historic cemetery.) The way to sabotage the CHICOM is to offer John McCain as a flight instructor.

First, your statement that the ChiComm apes don’t have the carrier experience will upset the doom and gloom surrender monkeys here on FR. They believe that the 50 IQ ChiComm apes can invade America whenever they want by floating over in bathtubs and ducky rings. In addition, the FR surrender monkeys think that there’s 50 divisions of ChiComm apes hiding in Texas sagebrush.

Good post, allendale.

4 ChiCom carriers = 4 Navy Crosses waiting to happen.

The ChiComs shouldn’t be worried about our carriers can do to their carriers. They should be worried about what our submarines can do to their carriers.
