Obama says marijuana 'no more dangerous than alcohol'
CNN ^ | Jan 19, 2014 | Kevin Liptak

Speaking to New Yorker editor David Remnick, Obama said he still viewed pot smoking negatively – but that on the whole, the drug wasn’t the social ill that it’s been viewed as in the past.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol,” Obama told the weekly magazine.

The president said pot was actually less dangerous than alcohol “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.”

Uh, (excessive) alcohol consumption, dope smoking, and tobacco smoking are ALL social ills. I respect the right of people to largely do what they please so long as they don’t harm me and mine, but let’s not kid ourselves. None of the above are good for you. Alcohol is the only one that has potentially good side effects when consumed in small quantities, but people have a propensity to abuse it, too.

Would you be a passenger on a plane whose pilot is high on drugs?

Marijuana might be no more dangerous than alcohol, but it is not any less dangerous either.

Both impair judgment, and can lead to illogical thought patterns, as well as dissipate resources better utilized elsewhere. Their true cost lies not in the acquisition, but in the collateral damage from the effects of the slowed reaction times and misperception of the immediate circumstances. Both drugs feed into paranoia and clumsy uncoordinated actions, and slurred speech is only part of the problem.

Alcoholism and marijuana dependence are both preventable diseases.

And the treatment is identical in both instances - complete abstinence. There is never a surefire cure, short of that lifetime commitment.

” I respect the right of people to largely do what they please so long as they don’t harm me and mine, “

THAT is the key — the problem is that those people endanger others because they work, drive, etc., etc., in their impaired condition, putting innocent people at risk.

This is where the far left and the libertarians sit down and smoke in unison. Great groups, those two.

And it's a problem even with draconian laws that snare the innocent and reduce the freedoms of all.

Government has no right to dictate what substances people can put into their bodies.

Exactly! Finally someone gets to the real essence of the matter, to the principle. Do our bodies belong to us or to the government?

Alcohol is legal. Would you get on a plane piloted by a drunk?

That’s the thing. If you’re going to use that argument, you must say that all drugs, including antibiotics and all prescriptions, must be legal to take on demand as much as you want.

So get on the bandwagon to legalize meth and the rest, otherwise you’re picking and choosing just like Hussein here is doing or else you will truly be a hypocrite.

> Pot alters something in people’s heads. They are different after they start smoking. If you’ve known people who started to smoke, they are definitely different people afterwards. And the change is not for the better. They seem to lose their moral compass. They have an ‘I do not give a darn about things’ attitude,<

Get the same outcome with legal Prozac.

I don't find in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution where Congress was delegated the power to legislate about anything involving drugs of any sort.

That is more appropriately a police power of the States.

The federal government needs to go back into it's Constitutional box.
