Back Bay (VA) Feral Hogs Running Wild

The destructive and fertile wild hogs that roam the marshes around Back Bay are poised for a bumper year.

Some of their favorite foods are abundant, and the guy with a knack for trapping them has moved to another job.

"I'm sure the pigs did a little dance," said Molly Brown, president of Friends of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

The jig would have been for the departure of David Bishop, an invasive-species biologist who spent the past three years trying to keep in check the state's oldest population of hogs in the refuge and adjoining False Cape State Park.

Hunting is ineffective in controling hogs. They’re too smart and reproduce too rapidly. GA has no limit and no closed season on hogs and has been that way for years, but the hogs keep expanding their numbers. Large scale trapping is the best way.

"Trapping? Just make it open season for hunting them or even put a bounty on them. Not only would it thin the herd but most hunters I know donate the meat they can't eat to charity and homeless shelters. It would be a win-win situation."

Just start a reality show like "Duck Dynasty" and those feral hogs will be taken care of really quickly!

Good TV!

It’s an informative news item worth passing along.
Indeed, but you (accidentally) claimed credit for authoring it.

We saw a show on TV where this guy was using a chopper and he was really wiping them out. Of course here in GA we don’t have the open spaces they do out west.

I agree with you that just walking around in the woods hunting hogs is not going to eradicate them in GA.
Don’t we have over a million of them?

Mr. GG2 and I were speculation that when the SHTF we will probably be glad for too many deer and hogs.

They're based in Columbus GA. I'm sure you could work something out for a relatively low cost. Let the rest of us know how it tasted if you're successful.

In most states laws against selling wild game prevents that type venture. Even though feral hogs are considered vermin in Alabama I’m sure there are some sort of health regulations that prevent commercial use.

Thats a good thought. My mouth is watering. :-)

For New Years we used to dig a hole in the yard and double over a big piece of chicken wire to cover the top. Then in the middle of the night after burning oak chunks for hours we would put about a 40 pounder on the wire and cook it until late afternoon. We kept basting it in this mojito marinade we would make up. Just about the time everyone sobered up from New Years Eve the night before we would take that pig off and it was the best ever.

Damn.

Well, some state needs to break some ground and lead the way. I'm sure this would go a long way to solving the problem...assuming, of course, that "Hog Wild" barb-au-que tastes good.

I agree with you 100%. But the government would rather have people starve rather than let them eat unregulated food. That’s why I donate my surplus hogs to the neighbors. Usually I paid for the processing.

Yes, even if marinated. Young boar hogs are castrated when they weigh about 25-40 lbs to give the testosterone time to dissipate from their bodies.

P.S. If you ever smelled boar meat, you won’t forget it. When cooking it reminds me of my dad’s sweaty t-shirts.
