Mississippi state senator Chris McDaniel may be running for the Republican nomination for one of his states U.S. Senate seats, but hell be the first to tell you that he puts his conservative principles ahead of his allegiance to party.
McDaniels proudest moment back home came when he tried to override a veto from Republican governor Haley Barbour one of the GOP establishments eminent figures to rein in the states aggressive use of eminent domain for redevelopment purposes.
Private property is one of the cornerstones of our Constitution. And if the government can take it arbitrarily for almost any purpose, then we are not truly a free people, McDaniel tells me over breakfast in Washington, D.C.
Now hes taking on Republican senator Thad Cochran, an old-school appropriator who has been serving in Congress for 41 years.

Barbour, meanwhile, is not a fan. I think he will get his head handed to him, and that will be what he deserves, the former governor, now a lobbyist, said of Chris McDaniel before he announced his primary bid. What's ironic is that Haley came into the public eye by doing exactly what Chris McDaniel is doing, challenging a long time sitting Senator in a primary. ;o)

What hurts the most is the lack of knowledge of the people of MS, who for years voted for Eastland and Stennis without any reservation at all. And Cochran has been around nearly as long as Stennis, probably longer than Eastland. People in MS know nothing of Cochran’s real record.

No, Barbour ran against Stennis in 1982 in the general election and fared poorly. MS people like incumbency.

I used to be a huge Haley Barbour supporter!
I have to admit, he was a great governor during his first term.

Without giving my age away...oh, let’s just put it this way.
I was in junior high school when Thad Cochran was elected to the Senate.
No one, regardless of whether they have a D or R after their name, should be holding office for that long.

Chris McDaniel had just been born a few months when Thaddeus Cochran went to the U.S. House.
