The Minnesota starvation experiment
BBC ^ | 19 January 2014 | Janet Ball

In 1944, 26-year-old Marshall Sutton was a young idealist who wanted to change the world for the better. As a conscientious objector and Quaker, he refused to fight in the war but he still craved the chance to help his country.

"I wanted to identify with the suffering in the world at that time," he says. "I wanted to do something for society. I wanted to put myself in a little danger."

That danger came, unexpectedly, in the shape of a small brochure with a picture of children on the front.

"Will you starve that they be better fed?" it asked. It was a call for volunteers to act as human guinea pigs in a medical experiment at the University of Minnesota.

There once was a farmer who decided he could save money and increase efficiency by getting his horse used to eating less and less every day. So he steadily decreased the daily rations given to the horse.

The experiment would have worked too, if the horse didn’t die on him.

What is fascinating is that the diet that they were eating - low in fat, low in protein, high in carbohydrate.

Exactly what the government is recommending for “healthy” weight loss.

For them, it lead to depression, insanity, and self-mutilation. On 1800 calories/day. Far more than is recommended by many of our “safe” weight-loss diets.

If I don’t eat my peas... someone in Africa will starve?

The logistics never made sense when I was a kid and still don’t

Like Brad Pitt’s charity using non-chemical treated “treated” lumber with a 40 year warranty to build porches and decks in New Orleans. They said the lumber saves the environment.

After 3 years they are rotting.

My father in law was an AF POW in Poland when they were liberated by the Russians he weighed a 105#.

He was a legend in the PLAV, it was reported that most of the newly born children in North Central Poland, born shortly after the war were his.

You would think that if you didn’t eat your peas, demand would be lower and with lower demand the price should go down for the Chinese and enable a starving Chinese child to eat cheaper.

If everyone in America refused to eat peas, we could end hunger on Earth!

We need to launch a "Don't Eat Peas" petition and campaign

In the article it says when you starve you lose all sexual desire. Was his legend status before or after he entered the camp?

After, the Russians turned them loose to find their way to Memel where they would be picked up by the US.

He is Lithuanian, speaks Polish like a native. As my pal Big Al said one time, “You think I'm crazy and Mitch is your father in law, I'm not in the same league.”

My father in law was an AF POW in Poland when they were liberated by the Russians he weighed a 105#.

During WWII the Japs would allow some POWs to send a card home, saying they were well treated by their captors. One of the Bataan survivors wrote his folks saying that he was indeed, well treated, and now weighed almost as much as cousin Jimmy. Cousin Jimmy was 14 and weighed 110 pounds.

During the Depression, thousands of Finns from Minnesota immigrated to the Soviet Union to help build a socialist paradise. About half of these almost immediately returned to the US after they found out what happened to the Ukrainians.

“...conscientious objector and Quaker, he refused to fight..”

SOB. He should be made to enlist and at least work in the rear in support or the like; otherwise, deport that ba$tard—anywhere.

I think you were supposed to APPRECIATE that you had peas to eat while children in Africa, China, etc., were starving. It wasn’t that your eating somehow would prevent their hunger.
