Swiss Guard veteran claims existence of 'gay network' at the Vatican
Guardian ^ | 1/20/14 | Lizzie Davies

A former commander of the Swiss Guard, the small force of men whose job it is to protect the pope, has said there is "a network of homosexuals" within the Vatican, the latest in a series of claims about gay priests working at the heart of the Roman Catholic church.

Elmar Mäder, who was commandant of the Guard from 2002 until 2008, said his time at the heart of the Vatican had given him an insight into certain aspects of life there. "I cannot refute the claim that there is a network of homosexuals. My experiences would indicate the existence of such a thing," he told the Swiss newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag.

***

A working environment in which the great majority of men are unmarried is per se a draw for homosexuals, whether they consciously seek it out or unconsciously follow an urge," he said.

"The Roman Curia [the Vatican's bureaucracy] is exactly this kind of environment."

***

Mäder, while he said he did not have a problem with homosexuality, said he feared that a network or secret society of gay people within the Vatican could pose security problems. He added that he would not have promoted a gay man in the Guard – not because of his sexuality but because "the risk of disloyalty would have been too high".

Mäder said: "I also learned that many homosexuals are inclined to be more loyal to each other than to other people or institutions," he said.

"If this loyalty were to go as far as to become a network or even a kind of secret society, I would not tolerate it in my sphere of decision making. Key people in the Vatican now seem to think similarly."

I think this point about loyalty has been demonstrated repeatedly in America in recent times, particularly in what were once considered conservative circles.

such “networks” are a sign of rot and decadence. Its seen again and again, from Chinese dynasties to Rome to the Vatican.

How long before the Pope says homosexuality is not a sin? Remember, he IS God’s representative on Earth so I’m sure God could give him a new verse.

It’ll become one of those “More will be revealed later” type of things.

Because you see the problem isn’t homosexuality - it’s Catholicism.

What gave them away... a hand on a leg, a pat on the butt, a swishy diphthong?...

The problem is not celibacy...it’s homosexuality.

Actually non-Catholic ministers and people who are around children like relatives and teachers have higher incidents of pedophilia.

You must not be aware that the seminaries in the U. S. were cleaned out by Pope Benedict XVI. They are bursting with young straight men wanting to be priests.

Please get the correct information before you post again.

If I wasn’t on my phone I’d send a let me Google that for you, directed toward the definition of sarcasm. Hard to believe it wasn’t intuitively obvious to you.

Regrettably, it’s not that obvious lately, and a few likely agree with the text of your post.

In the world of priests, celibacy only includes sex with women. Any other forms are fine.
Which is why they have so many problems.

Bursting? Really? That flow of priests coming must be the reason that priests travel to parishes like a 1900’s circuit court judge.

Or why they close down parishes that have been active for more than 100 years.

The first three words of my post made it a dead giveaway! Really though, would I last for 15 years here as a troll?

P.s., my catholic school years made government schools a cakewalk. :)

The Vatican commander in this article describes the type of male culture at the Vatican.

“”A working environment in which the great majority of men are unmarried is per se a draw for homosexuals, whether they consciously seek it out or unconsciously follow an urge,” he said.

“The Roman Curia [the Vatican’s bureaucracy] is exactly this kind of environment.””

Sorry, the teaching model just plain doesn't work like that. (See a certain religious group headquartered in Salt Lake City for a different approach, however.)

God doesn't change his mind, and he especially doesn't change his mind about stuff like the moral law.

However, I'll quibble a bit: "homosexuality" is not a sin, it's a predilection toward a particular set of sins, just as "kleptomania" is a predilection toward sins of theft.

Homosexual *acts* are grave sins. Always. Without exception. So is any other use of the sexual faculty excepting only marital congress that is open to conception.
