The numbers come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and looked at 9,000 people.
The research followed all races of men from the time they were 12-16 years old until they were adults.
The findings say 49% of black men had been arrested by the time they were 23. Hispanic men were next with a 44% arrest rate. 38% of white men reported they had spent time behind bars.
The crimes covered everything from assault to underage drinking with minor traffic arrests not factored in.
The numbers told a very different story when it came to women.
20% of white females say they had been in the pokey by age 23. Hispanic women were next at 18% and black women third at 16%.

And yes, I'd include Drunk driving and other convictions in that list. Of course, I lead a boring life, but there are lot more people more boring than me out there.
That’s what I was thinking too…….those percentages of all groups are stunningly high.
These arrests include (among other things) arrests for leaving a knife or gun in one's car when one drove to school (rightly decried as both absurd and unjust by most FReepers), arrests for assault resulting from high school fights that in our youth would have been handled by the principal and teachers without any criminal charges, arrests for DUIs which would not have been DUIs a decade ago before the Feds pushed the states to lower the blood alcohol level required for the charge, and lots of arrests for underage drinking by 18 to 20 year olds, that again (in most states) would not have been a crime in our youth.
While there has been a decline in morality in our society (I'm not even sure it's concentrated among the young, cf. my comments on the "Era of Bad Stewards" on other threads), a lot of this is a result of the coercive nanny state as documented in books with titles like One Nation Under Arrest and Three Felonies a Day.
I wonder how the stats work out when the category is violent crime?

Neither am I, unless if I am really really out of touch. I’m from a small town, and it’s been a while since I graduated, still, I and everyone has a pretty good idea of who’s been arrested, and it sure isn’t 2 out of every 5 guys.
I do not believe their statistics. No way these numbers are this high for any of the categories.
Not buying that % of white men either.
If this is true it just shows that blacks are treated with kid gloves. The police arrest them but the black robed tyrants and liberal prosecutors let them off the hook and back into the streets. Saint Trayvon was an experienced criminal. The school authorities and police new it, but the worst they gave him was a slap on the wrist.
But it may not just be ideology that keeps these cretins out of prison, it could be plain logistics. If all those blacks who truly deserved it were convicted and sent to prison, the prisons would be literally bursting at the seams. So would the prison budget.
And lets not forget another thing. Prison for these thugs is absolutely no deterrent to crime. Prison to them is like a vacation. There are three hots and a cot. No bills, no work. Free cable tv and gym. They get to hang out with their friends all day and its all the drugs and on-the-down-low sex they want.

No, and I don't see where this report comes from the a study performed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There is a recent survey that was discussed here previously -- the problem is that it was a survey that asked a relatively small sample -- who may or may not be answering truthfully -- and that the conclusion doesn't stand the test of even making sense.

I don't doubt that taxpayers have wasted millions paying for another study that comes to conclusions that are completely wrong. I suppose this is going to become one of those fables that, after it's repeated enough, the majority will actually believe.
They’re messing with the numbers to make it seem it’s ‘all equivalent’ - it’s not. Ask the people who run large city police departments where their forces are deployed... they know the truth.
So you are saying that Stalin's Soviet Union was a better place to be than the US, based solely on this fishy report?
Eric Holder will demand the arrest of more white people, to offset these racist numbers — whether or not white people committed any crimes!
The solution is obvious.
Eric Holder needs to put out an Executive Order to police departments to stop arresting black men.
