MLA Hates Common Core

When education reforms are attacked by both the Left and Right, maybe both sides have a good point. “Looking at the language of Common Core, you find that it contains a lot of weasel-speak,” Daniel D. Hade of Penn State said at the Modern Language Association’s annual meeting in Chicago last week.

Indeed, it should be noted that the drafters of the Common Core State Standards on English Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects claim to be “internationally benchmarked.” How can you “internationally benchmark” something that by definition is tied inextricably to a particular language?

The Obama Administration’s point man promoting Common Core, U. S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, never taught, Hade pointed out in the MLA panel on “Children’s Literature and the Common Core.”

Common Core advocates claim they are “Preparing America’s Students for College & Career.” Hade calls it “education for cubicles.”

It turns out that the Common Core crafters even try to weasel out of their own pronouncements. “They developed a publisher’s guide even though they say they are leaving it up to the teacher,” Kristin McIlhagga of Michigan State University pointed out on that same panel.

In a webinar on Common Core, Amy Cox of Capstone claimed that “Every book is a Common Core book.” Yet and still, she averred that picking every book on the Common Core list is “irresponsible data collection.”

Sarah Minslow of the University of North Carolina observed that 70 percent of the recommended readings are made of informational text. Though the standards emphasize “career readiness,” Minslow argues that “jobs will change when these kids graduate.” Maybe the Common Core artists should have talked to a few newspaper reporters, or fax machine mechanics.

Nonetheless, don’t imagine that the antipathy academics are showing for Common Core is signaling a shift to the right on their part. They are not likely to show up at TEA party rallies anytime soon. “We need to form alliances with progressive groups to resist Common Core,” Hade said.

“Imagination provides something vital to progressive society,” Minslow said. “Students need to be solutions-oriented rather than problem-oriented.” She teaches a “human rights-related course” on “war and genocide in children’s literature.”

Michelle Holley Martin of the University of South Carolina, says “I live in the buckle of the Bible Belt.”

She remembered that “one of my evaluations at my last university read, ‘I appreciate all this multicultural literature but can we read real literature too?’”

What? The drafters, themselves, claim to be benchmarked? Or do the drafters claim that their standards are benchmarked?

Also: Considering that English is the mother tongue of more than 400 million people native to a number of different countries, I see no problem with developing "international" benchmarks for English literacy. If, on the other hand, the language were Icelandic, which is spoken only in Iceland, the author would have a point.

Regards,

Every damn yankee says that when they move South. Reality says that each “Suthrin State” is a Bible-belt-loop with any such “buckle” realistically being in Louisiana and/or Alabama.

Don’t get too full of yourself. Especially if you are an immigrant yankee.

They probably want to remove the good parts of common core and replace it with even more of the muddleheaded parts we dislike.

I am opposed to one-size-fits-all programs on philosophical as well as practical levels. The basic assumption is that all humans are the same physically, intellectually, etc. We are not—Just ask the Marines.

I'm heading up a group against Common Core in my parish. Here's some of the info we've been looking through:

Common Core Information Links Prominent Catholic scholars --- 132 of them at last count ---co-signed a letter which was delivered to every bishop in the United States, expressing grave concern about Common Core as a threat the Catholic identity of parochial schools, and the Judeo-Christian values which are at the root of Western Civilization’s culture and heritage:

http://files.meetup.com/1387375/Letter%20to%20Catholic%20Bishops%20on%20the%20Common%20Core%20F.pdf

“Common Core Debate Intensifies Among Catholic Educators” (Nat. Cath. Register)

http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/common-core-debate-intensifies-among-catholic-educators/

Two groups in Nashville have lead the charge against Common Core either because they are concerned about its questionable (secular) educational standards, or its overall threat to Religious and Constitutional liberties: TN Against Common Core. tnacc.net (Karen Bracken) and TN Eagle Forum tneagleforum.org (Bobbie Patray). On a national level, the whistle-blowers are Heritage Foundation and CATO Institute.

The ObamaCare of Education: “You have to pass it to find out what’s in it”?

TN agreed to accept Common Core Standards in January 2010 before they even had a draft (March 2010), let alone the Final version (June 2010). Here is Common Core Public License -notice protected by copyright. These cannot be altered in any way
http://www.corestandards.org/public-license

Attachment Above- TNFirst to the Top Executive Summary. Notice that the Standards mentioned are Common Core Standards. This Law was signed on January 18, 2010. The Common Core Standards did not come out for approval until June 2010. How did our State Legislature know what they were in January 2010?? How did the State Board of Education know what they were? In addition at the top of page 3, it talks about our State Longitudinal Data System and other areas it can pull from. What will stop them from incorporating more data points, collecting more personal and family information about students and their families, without their parents’ knowledge or consent?

There are plenty of secular reasons why Common Core standards reflect, not “deeper learning” and “state of the art learning strategies” as they claim, but muddled, experimental methodologies, and goals hovering dubiously at the lowest common denominator.

NATIONAL SEXUALITY EDUCATION STANDARDS: Look at bottom of pg. 6 and you will see Common Core State Standards involvement. If you look at who was involved in their makeup, you see Planned Parenthood everywhere.

WHO’S BEHIND COMMON CORE:

It is important to know that here in Tennessee, the TN DEPT OF EDUCATION received 3.6 million dollars from Gates, SCORE- Bill Frist/ Jamie Woodson Organization received 1.8 million dollars, and the Fordham Institute was given 6.7 million from Gates and asked to grade Common Core. National PTA received 1 million dollars and Chamber of Commerce has received from Gates to promote Common Core. It is hard to stay objective when you are getting money to promote. Remember Gates spent millions to create Common Core w/ Feds, Partner w/ Pearson who own the Educational Textbooks, and gave 30 million dollars to David Coleman to align SAT w/ Common Core Standards. I included a few articles below.

THE BIG PLAYERS ARE: FEDERAL GOVT, BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION, ELI BROAD, WALTON FOUNDATION

2 SHORT VIDEOS by the architects and planners of Common Core:

David Coleman, president of the College Board and creator of the Common Core State Standards, talks to data analysts in a conference in Boston on May 31, 2013. Coleman wrote Common Core Standards and is now at SAT aligning the College Admissions Testing.

Linda Darling Hammond (who was Obama's first choice for Education Secretary and an associate of William Ayers, now acclaimed “education expert”, formerly “Weather Underground” terrorist bomber. Hamond was very influential in Common Core Standards and is in charge of one of the 2 National Tests. She is at Smarter Balance, where TN choose to go with the PARCC Tests. This video will show you the mindset of the push for standards.
