Morning Joe Panel: Wendy Davis Story Fake But True

Caleb Howe

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe early today, the panel discussed the growing controversy over the accuracy and truthfulness of claims made by Texas Gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis. The segment has a scare chyron across the bottom of the screen that laments “GUBERNATORIAL RACE GETS UGLY EARLY”. Oh fret and bother.

Mika Brzezinski tells us that Republicans have “pounced” on the “discrepancies”, and then first tosses to NBC News political reporter Kasie Hunt, who immediately brings up what is sure to be the talking point of the week, the “basic narrative”. The basic narrative is correct, you see, even if the details were wrong.

This NBC political reporter spends the remainder of the segment blatantly campaigning for Davis, bringing up the “basic narrative” narrative a second time less than two minutes later. “Some of the details are not quite right,” she says. But “the basic narrative” is “true.”

Donny Deutsch and Willie Geist are also quick to “pounce” on this defense, and Mika takes the cake when she says “so she just exaggerated” with a tone of voice that makes it clear that exaggerating is no big deal and everyone should just shut up and vote for Wendy immediately. Which is pretty well in keeping with MSNBC’s position on the matter to date.

DECEMBER 27, 2012 — NBC News today announced that Kasie Hunt will join the network’s Washington, DC bureau as an off-air reporter/producer covering politics beginning January 7, 2013. She will leverage her considerable experience on Capitol Hill and the campaign trail to contribute editorially across the network’s many platforms.

Hunt comes to NBC News from the Associated Press, where she has served as a national political reporter since August 2011. As one of the organization’s lead campaign trail reporters, Hunt covered the Republican primary field and nominee Mitt Romney, eventually following the Romney campaign nearly full time from December 2011 through election day.

Prior to joining the AP, Hunt covered the 2010 mid-term elections and the emerging GOP presidential primary race as a national political reporter for POLITICO. Earlier, she covered health care, education, and labor policy for National Journal’s CongressDaily, where she closely followed the Affordable Care Act from inception to passage. She began her journalism career as an intern with the NBC News political unit.

Hunt has appeared regularly on numerous television programs, including MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd,” “NOW with Alex Wagner,” and “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” as well as NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show.”

Hunt is a graduate of George Washington University and holds a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Cambridge, where she was a member of St John’s College.

Kasie Hunt isn’t with MSNBC. She works for NBC News and presents herself as an objective reporter. This is a tweet she fired off less than a half-hour into Senator Ted Cruz’s Tuesday afternoon filibuster of ObamaCare.

This is not reporting, it is a snarky, non-sequitur, cheap shot you would expect to be written by someone at the Daily Kos.

Kasie Hunt @kasie

Cruz, graduate of Princeton & Harvard, says, “we don’t work for the intelligentsia in the big cities.”

MSNBC = NBC.
Hunt has appeared regularly on numerous television programs, including MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd,” “NOW with Alex Wagner,” and “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” as well as NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show.” …
Former AP, former Politico. She is right at home.

LOL. From Ann's article:

Hey -- maybe Jeff Davis should run for governor! He's the one who raised two kids, including a stepdaughter, while holding down a job and paying for his wife's law school. There's a hard-luck story!

Half their audience seems to be conservatives looking for something to get angry about.
Or it seems that way given the intense coverage our side gives them.

If Rick Harrison couldn’t put it on the shelf at his pawn shop, why should anyone put it in the Governor’s Mansion?

Is that her real name, or was she a stripper before she got the gig at MSLSD?

I'm trying to imagine Mika Brzezinski without her powerful father. Why do a Waffle House in Tallahassee and a third-rate strip joint in Bismark, North Dakota keep popping into my head?

scare chyron across the bottom of the screen that laments “GUBERNATORIAL RACE GETS UGLY EARLY”.

Any time the liberals (root word liberty{WTF}) have to face the truth it gets ugly.

".....a third-rate strip joint in Bismark, North Dakota"

The chain of clubs known as "Deja Vu" advertises "Thousands of beautiful girls and three ugly ones."

Could be Mika's shot at the big time.

Why are socialists in America called “liberals?” Simple - because they wanna be called that - and because the journalists who do the labeling are socialists.

The term “liberal” is probably still applied to people who believe in liberty outside the US; my daughter taught English in Venezuela some years back, and it was still the case there then. She said it was disorienting. And (as you implied) it was so in the US until the 1920s. The Austrian economist FA von Hayek learned English in America just before the 1920s started - and he was teaching in London when he wrote The Road to Serfdom during WWII. In Serfdom. Hayek used the term “liberal” as a positive political label throughout - and, when he did a book tour in America he was dismayed to learn what had happened to the term here since he had left. According to Safire’s New Political Dictionary, the meaning of the term was changed - essentially inverted - in the 1920s. By the thirties FDR used the term unselfconsciously to refer to his own philosophy - which as we all know was actually socialistic.
