Wendy Davis's Vogue Profile: An Elitist Wolf in Populist Sheep's Clothing
Big Journalism ^ | 1/23/2014 | FRANCES MARTEL

The rise of Wendy Davis as feminist icon can be traced almost completely to one exact moment: the publication of Vogue's lauding profile of the Texas gubernatorial candidate. In light of recent revelations, we went back to look at all the half-truths and misrepresentations Vogue printed about the Democratic star.

The profile darts around various aspects of Davis's life: her relationship with her parents and children, her work in the Texas Senate, her shoes. It is a schizophrenic image that Vogue reveals of Davis as a woman. Davis has a "bootstraps background," went into politics to help the poor, and "spearhead[ed] economic developments in blighted areas of Fort Worth" as a lawyer.

Yet Vogue follows her with an almost Bret Easton Ellis-like sensibility for expensive clothing brands and casually hints at her prodigious wealth. The family drinks Sancerre at a football party. Among the most important details of her filibuster, apparently, are her "pink Mizuno running shoes and a sky-blue Escada day coat concealing a back brace." Yet Davis, the profile insists, is a woman of the people.

The profile also makes the same factual errors as many in the past, and that is a failure of the journalist but a sin only of the politician at hand. The profile claims that Davis's mother had a sixth-grade education – a myth soundly debunked (Davis' mother finished ninth grade). Davis claims to have been "recently out of the trailer park" at 25 despite having divorced at 21 (not 19 as she previously claimed), having only lived in the park with her mother for some months after the divorce.

Then there is the case of her legal work in Fort Worth. Vogue claims that she spent much of her time in Fort Worth's government "spearheading economic developments in blighted areas of Fort Worth." Quite an embellishment…

Only an observation....but resume-wise....is there anything at all of substance that she’s done over the past five years that would warrant some job like governor? It just seems to be some gimmick-candidate, with no background, or expertise to brag about. Has she ever run a business, managed a trailer-park, or sold insurance?

No surprise here. I’ve said elsewhere that liberals used to be populists, but now they’re elitists.

Vogue is in the business of selling women the possibility of turning...
this... into this.
Why wouldn't they latch onto Abortion Barbie. She's their customer base.

Lord I hope we have more on this woman then these facts. I mean she probably left her husband at 19 and once all the paperwork and court stuff was done she was 21. She let her husband keep the kid while she went to college. I am not sure this is enough to turn off her fans. We better take this woman seriously. Texas has elected Democratic Governors before. The last thing we need is to take this woman as a joke. We do that all the time and then are stunned that they get elected. I don't care how close Al Franken was or how much fraud there was, for him to even be able to steal it because it was so close is number one reason we should take her seriously.

populists and elitists are just two sides of the same coin - the coin of tyranny.

as we can see, the elite media is pushing her big time. Really Vogue, your supposed to be about style, she has none along with truth and honor

Has Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton? And they’re not just at the governor level.

What does it say to the children that their mother is a tireless advocate for abortion?

You are right about before. I still cannot believe that Richards, wide eyed liberal drunk that she was, actually was governor there.

It says something about the shallowness of the “feminist” movement that an untalented, largely fictionalized hack like Wendy Davis can rise in their ranks so high so quickly. Setting the bar that low smacks of either desperation or superficiality, both of which have become hallmarks of the moribund movement.

Have you ever thought that your 'tagline'; "Santorum-Bachmann 2016 for the future of the country!" is enough to ensure that not a word you write will be considered as logical or with merit?!?

The same lack of credentials didn’t stop liberals from electing Barack Obama to a much higher office ... twice.

Ability is of little value to Leftists. What’s important is image, packaging, just the things the Vogue article emphasized, such as how well she wore a suit and the color of her jogging shoes.

The feminists got everything they wanted, and have basically segregated society and demonized men.

Funny, I remember the same questions asked about a certain ascendant IL senaturd back in 2007. I just hope and pray Texas is still a long way from being overtaken by libs and lo-infos like the country at large.
