AMD Rolls Out "Warsaw" Opteron CPUs With 12 and 16 Cores

 AMD today released two new Opteron chips based off the company's "Piledriver" core. Part of the 6300 series codenamed "Warsaw", the 6370P packs 16 cores and the 6338P has 12 cores. Both of these new processors are fully socket and software compatible with the existing AMD Opteron 6300 Series.

AMD boasts that the new Opterons are ideal for the Open 3.0 Open Compute Platform, complex compute needs of data analysis, xSQL and traditional databases, citing reasons of power efficiency and cost effectiveness. Specifically, these Warsaw parts have a TDP of 99 W. As far as cost effectiveness, the 16 core model is priced at $598 and the 12 core $377.

Attractive for those hosting VMs on VMware, VirtualBox or HyperV. Mix it up with 32 GB RAM and some big SSD storage for a useful platform. NAS/SAN on a 10 Gb Enet rounds out the package.

Quad core CPU is overkill for most computer users. A fast low wattage dual core will do what they need. An i3 or i5 Haswell for example by Intel...both have very high benchmarks

I replaced a room full of SPARC blades with a pair of HP BL680c blades with (2 sockets x 10 cores x 2 threads/core) and 64 GB RAM per blade. A p2000 disk array with 4 TB RAID 10 on 10 Gb Enet hosts about 30 VMs including 32/64 bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6. A few Windows servers and a Solaris 10 x86 as well. Good performance. Low power. Small foot print. Small heat load. The new CPU in this article exceeds the 10 core per socket devices I’m using. At home I use an i7-2600k CPU with 16 GB RAM and 3 TB SATAIII disk. Good enough for home use.

Most off the shelf software doesn’t leverage multi-core chips. The stuff I build for my customers does leverage it.
Big JVM, processor affinity for compute/IO tasks, big RAM, multiple hosts interacting via networked CORBA tasks. Ada code with polyorb for multitasking too. Because my employment depends on that skillset, I build enough machine at home to polish techniques for work. On a previous task, I was content to use a Dell D600 laptop for DSP in C++ and the FFTW libraries. The algorithms were developed using MATLAB for proof of concept. The C++ version was for real time.

My laptop computer has an i5-2450M processor. It seems to be plenty fast, but I’m not into gaming or anything like that.

But even the highest is only 2.8ghz in turbo. I have a 6core AMD 6350 (by God's grace) which is 3.9ghz stock (and at 140.00 much much cheaper) Why would the 16 core 600.00 chip provide much more speed. Not that i could or am going to get one.

Yup. For most folks, even a quad core is overkill.

I've actually found some applications that I max out my 8-core box on. I must admit though, it's really nice to see that many CPUs when I run top.

It’s a server CPU, so I assume it doesn’t really need to be all that fast most of the time — and it uses only 99 watts compared to your 125 watt CPU.
