Sheriff Joe Arpaio: 38 Arizona inmates who defaced flag to eat only bread, water
CNN ^ | Jan 24, 2014 | Faith Karimi

Posted on 01/24/2014 6:29:17 AM PST by Innovative

A diet of bread and water is the punishment for dozens of Arizona inmates who allegedly defaced American flags placed in their jail cells.

The 38 male inmates are part of the Maricopa County jail system, which is under the control of controversial sheriff Joe Arpaio.

For their alleged unpatriotic acts, the sheriff said Thursday, they'll survive on bread and water for seven days.

"These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells," Arpaio said. "Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel. It's a disgrace ... this is government property that they are destroying, and we will take action against those who act this way."

Good! Prisoners and people need to learn that actions have consequences -- watch for liberal lawyers suing claiming that this is an interference with the inmates free speech rights...

Sheriff Arpaio for president!

Too bad that isn't realistic, but that's what we need, a tough Sheriff to get this country in order.

Good. There was a time when even the worst of prison inmates still loved this country and would have dealt with this sort of thing on their own.

believe it or not ... there was a time in America not that long ago when the vast majority of men here were like Sheriff Joe.

How far we have fallen.

Maybe we can clone the man!

The American flag means absolutely nothing to over half of the humanoids living in this country. The buck is their new flag.

Am I the only one who thinks it is idiotic? Why spend money on “patriotic” stuff for the damn prisoners?

I wonder if CNN has ever describes any liberal loon - like andy cuomo - as controversial?

I love Sheriff Joe, but putting an american flag in their cells was just inviting trouble

They could have tied them together and made a rope, for example.

A jail cell should have ONLY what the need to survive, and books to keep them quiet

Because Joe Arpio is an American who still believes in second chances and rehabilitation. In fact, those things make him a better American than most in my opinion.

Great.Second changes and rehabilitation on taxpayers’ money. And we know how that turned out - half of the flags covered in feces.

Good. There was a time when even the worst of prison inmates still loved this country and would have dealt with this sort of thing on their own.

During WWII when they could not get out to fight they served in other ways even up to being test cases for medical research. Some received pardons for their work. But that was America. This is Obama's Marxist 3rd world.

The flags in the cells are decals approx. 3X5 inches. They are not cloth, plastic, etc.

Out of the approx. 8900 prisoners in our jail system, only a very few have ever defaced the flags. And remember, we are constantly getting new prisoners every day.

Many of the prisoners are in fact somewhat patriotic.

Sounds like you’ve never hunted rattlers. You pump something noxious into their lairs. Something they hate, like gasoline. Then they come crawling out.

Sheriff Joe was just smoking out a few rattlers. Now that they are identified, they are on bread and water. The flag in the cell is about having them self-identify for further communication and intervention.

He should out the whole prison population on bread and water for this act by a “few” ...let the population deal with the punishment of the few. If I was put on bread and water because of somebody else’s “act”...I’d find a way to keep that from happening again.

still, there is no reason for the expense of adding a flag to each room

Am I not getting my point across? These are not normal human beings, these are criminals.

What requirement is there for a flag in each room?

I am not anti-flag, or unpatriotic, I am just saying why give criminals an excuse or reason to do more stupid things?

It was unnecessary to their incarceration or “rehabilitation” It invites reaction, unnecessarily.

And I support Sheriff Joe 100%. I love it that he stuck them in tents and made them wear pink.

IIRC (from reading about Sheriff Joe over several years), Sheriff Joe decided at one point it was too expensive for the taxpayer to allow the prisoners to sleep in the jail building, especially when U.S. troops were overseas with less.

So, he moved the prisoners outside to a tent city and they were only allowed in the jail building once a week to clean it.

Then he realized more taxpayer money could be saved by not allowing the prisoners coffee and cut hot meals to twice a day (or once?), with lunch being bread and bologna.

He tried to cut their cable, but apparently, Kongress had decided cable tv was a "right" and made it a law......so, the prisoners can watch two channels (something silly).

The prisoners' uniforms are pink; pink jumpsuits, pink socks, pink underwear.

And the prisoners do manual labor. Sheriff Joe's "rehabilitation program," isn't the Disney World version liberals fantasize for prison and my understanding, Sheriff Joe does it on the cheap. - The prisoners are not having a good time.

Mr. K,

I understand your point. Sometimes, though, it is a good thing to attempt to bring people up out of their squalor than to continue to treat them like that is where they belong. It only works sometimes, but it does work.

I think the reason most people commit crimes is because of arrogance; the laws and rules do not apply to them. Much of society today makes excuses for wrong doing and people get away with committing crimes and breaking rules. When they start experiencing consequences for their actions, they generally change their behavior. Sometimes.

Discovery Channel and Disney Channel, IIRC, and the TV can only be powered if an inmate pedals a bike hooked up to power it.

Bear in mind that most of his prisoners are probably not Americans. They don't give a damn for this country or any other. They are invaders & predators, pure & simple.

I'd like to see them making pebbles from boulders, using only a sledge hammer. For those convicted of violent crimes, immediate execution.
