Walmart announced on Friday that about 2,300 Sam’s Club employees would be laid off, the latest in a drumbeat of retail job cuts to start off the new year.
Bill Durling, a Sam’s Club spokesman, said the layoffs would target a combination of salaried assistant managers and hourly employees. Certain positions, like telephone attendants, will be eliminated.
“We realized we had pretty much the same club structure whether a club had $50 million in revenue or $100 million in revenue,” Mr. Durling said of the distribution of assistant managers. “What we’re trying to do is balance our resources.”
Sam’s Club has about 116,000 employees, Mr. Durling said, and the job cuts will affect about four employees a store. Employees will have 60 paid days to find another job at the company. If they are not successful, they will be eligible for severance.
Sam’s Club will be opening at least 15 new stores over the course of the next fiscal year, which begins in February.

It costs around $90 to be a Sam’s club member. Used to be $30. I would rejoin if this fee went back down.
A Costco opened near us last summer. Since starting to shop there, we have scarcely been in Sam's. The selection/quality is better at Costco; they check you out in a hurry no matter how crowded it is. The lines @Sam's seem to be long even if the traffic is light. When our Sam's membership expires in March, we are going to let it go. Sad thing is that Sam's is almost walking distance, yet we'd rather drive 4-5 exits down the freeway to go to Costco.
Friends and I once launched a letter and email campaign to try and convince Trader Joe’s to open a store in La Crosse. We do have an Aldi’s there. The situation is exactly the same as Costco. TJ’s are in Rochester and Madison. They told us they had no plans at all to open in La Crosse.
They must have income/demographic models and cut offs.
Years ago, one girlfriend and I would make the drive to Madison (100 miles each way)about 2x a year to shop. In the past few years, it just became more expensive than it was worth.

I hope most of the 2300 laid off are cashiers. There are always too many of them crowding the Sams Clubs.
SEND THEM TO THE LOCAL WALMART! They never have enough cashiers there.
I hope it is based on political affiliation.
Not just income/demographics - population as well.
It's a convenience vs time trade-off. Target is generally more expensive, but the lines are very short.
We don’t have Costco. Is it Membership, like Sam’s Club or regular retail like Walmart?
The $$$ per s.f. do not necessarily compare. Do they have groceries and garden stuff?
I wonder what the cutoff is?
La Crosse has 50k residents, but pulls from surrounding rural/unincorporated areas of at least that many. We have low (under 5%) unemployment and a stable welfare group of around 8%. The major mall seems to be always full, at least the parking lot is.
Both TJs and Costco would do well there, IMO.
I’ve never been to a Costco. They have a tiered membership. I’m sure info is online as to what products they offer.

You may love your business, what you do, and who you serve, but the the bottom line is that you're in business to make $$$ and earn a living. If you can't do that, if it's costing you to keep your doors open, or if you can make more $$$ working a minimum wage job than owning a business and employing others (who make more than you do), it's time to go.
Good job dems/progressives/socialists. You've done your dirty work, accomplished your goals, and killed the economic pump of our economy: Small businesses.

Sam’s is a lot closer to Costco’s product level than they were, say, 10 years ago, but they’re still a notch down. I’m about 3 miles from one, and Sam’s is about 12.
