Arizona sheriff puts inmates on bread and water for desecrating U.S. flag

Reuters) - Dozens of inmates in Arizona jails run by a sheriff who has been a controversial figure in the national immigration debate have been put on a diet of bread and water for desecrating U.S. flags that hang in each cell, authorities said on Friday.

Maricopa County lawman Joe Arpaio, who has been called "America's toughest sheriff," said 38 inmates were currently getting these meals twice a day as punishment for destroying government property while in custody at six jails.

"These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells. Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel," Arpaio said in a statement. "It's a disgrace to those who have fought for our country."

The punishment will last for seven days, he said, and a second offense would bring 10 more days of the sparse diet.A sheriff's spokesman said the bread provides the daily requirement of calories and nutrients that is necessary. There are about 8,300 inmates in the jail system.

In recent months, the Maricopa County jails have broadcast patriotic songs over the public address systems - "The Star Spangled Banner" in the morning and "God Bless America" at night.

I’m betting that his approval rating among his electorate just went up because of this latest action.

....I've been liking this guy for many years. With Sheriff Joe, all laws mean something. With our "top cop" Holder, they only mean something if he agrees with that law.

GO SHERIFF ARPAIO.....

Showing no respect is always a cause for Mama to bring a fetch upside the head in almost every household in the world.

And the “fetch” was only bread and water? Probably pretty strong disciplinary action, considering what is NOT allowed in this country any more.

Don't get me wrong....I'm a Sheriff Joe supporter. I just don't want to see him neutralized if his actions become bizarre. I'm in favor of strict, not bizarre. We'll see how this latest is viewed.

I have met Joe Arpaio a couple of times back in the 80’s when I lived in Arizona. He was guest speaker at several mortgage banker functions I attended when I was in the industry. He is a no-nonsense guy who is plain spoken without a bunch of political double talk and obfuscation when he speaks. He was very popular at the time because he took his job as sherif very seriously. He didn’t treat the country inmates like they were at a hotel or a resort, like some do. His tent city, chain-gang style work details, pink underwear, educational TV instead of the usual Hollywood drivel, all endeared him to the law abiding population who elected him over and over with 80%+ popularity. I had a couple of friends who hated him. Might have been because they got caught drinking and driving in his roadblocks and had to spend some time in his tent city. His goal was to make jail so uncomfortable for the “guests” that they would keep straight and not want to come back. He’s a tough sheriff, which in my mind is what you want in that job. Not some pansy, pussy-footer like Obama and Holder who have gone after him for following the feds own rules on immigration enforcement.

Read that he was considering a run for Governor. What a great no bullshite Guvnah Sherriff Joe would make!

Still get a smile every time I think about him responding to some lib-wiener reporter who was crying about the County prisoner conditions in his tent farm and Joe said “we let them watch TV all day, but just the Weather Channel, so they can see how hot it is”.

I'm not interested in getting into a nit-picking debate on the Sheriff's latest set of punishments.

I posted what I posted because I have an inquiring mind. One of the things that interests me is to study public reaction to unusual things that are done by controversial public figures.

Is the public reaction one of outrage, is it mixed, is it surprising, or ignorant, or non-existant, or approving, disapproving, hated, loved, ignored?.....

I like to analyze issues and reactions.....and I'm always particularly interested in public reaction to Sheriff Joe's creative, attention-getting rules and punishments that he applies to his inmate population.

He is indeed a notably-unique person in today's array of the good, the bad and the beautiful public personages.
