Iirc this is how the Soviets avoided almost all if the hostage taking unpleasantness in Beruit in the 1980s. They had a couple Sovs who were taken hostage, but quickly figured out who the ringleaders were and took members of THEIR families hostage. And started sending the hostage takers things like fingers, toes and ears. The Sov hostages were quickly released and Sovs in Lebanon went unmolested from that point on.
