Too old to be given cancer treatment: NHS is 'writing off' patients who are over 75

Pensioners with cancer are being written off as too old to treat, campaigners said yesterday.

They cited figures showing survival rates for British patients aged 75 and over are among the worst in Europe.

Young lung cancer sufferers are only 10 per cent more likely to die within five years than their continental counterparts.

But pensioners with the disease have 44 per cent less chance of survival.

The figure for stomach cancer – at 45 per cent – is even worse.

My FIL was sent home to die. Bladder cancer. Took him months to get a scan. He suffered greatly.

My husband passed away from lung cancer. The last months of his life were made comfortable because he had ALL the morphine he needed to feel absolutely NO pain.
Some cancers are not curable and with the elderly sometimes the treatments are deadly. However, with pain, the answer is usually morphine, the "miracle" drug.

Well, I will be NOW expecting some FReeper to cite the exceptions s/he knows about which make my statement moot, untrue or not "good enough" or that s/he knows people who get NO relief from morphine or that it REALLY is no miracle at all.

Thanks, Al. He was a Brit and a WW2 vet. Was a gunner on the East Coast fighting “The Gerries”. He voted Labour (I forgave him of that because he just couldn’t see the forest for the trees after trying the rebuild post-war. Many fell for Socialism.). He was a good man, tho. Is this the same NHS that 50% of the 2012 Olympic Ceremonies was dedicated to? Between this, and the world-famous British dental work (or lack thereof), I’m not so sure that I would be all that proud of it, really.

The Soviet system was MUCH better. You drink yourself to death long before you get old and sick!

The key word here is pensioners, no longer will they have to be a financial burden meaning having to disperse YOUR MONEY TO YOU and the criminals can now confiscate YOUR hard earned money YOU worked all YOUR life for sooner rather than waiting for you to die naturally, THIS is the key the key they're after

Have you seen the Channel 4 show out of the UK called “Benefits Street”? It’s a play on a popular soap there called “Coronation Street”. It delved into (and has been contriversial) dole theft. Several ones featured in the show have been arrested.
