The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say 281 passengers have fallen ill aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The CDC said in a statement Friday that another 22 crew members also are ill, with people reporting vomiting and diarrhea. Authorities said it's not yet clear what is causing the illness.

When I was younger, I remember an outbreak of norovirus/Norwalk virus going through a wrestling camp I was attending. Needless to say, it spread fast and was very unpleasant.

It’s just your basic 24-hour stomach flu. It’s been going around (went through all 4 members of my household, one after the other). Highly contagious, and very unpleasant, but thankfully short-lived. After seeing how quickly and thoroughly it hit everyone in my house, it is not hard to see how it could go through an entire cruise ship in a matter of days.

Why do so many cruise ships have these major outbreaks of illness? It seems that we hear about this problem about ten times a year.

The problem has always been around. It’s just that the internet is here to advertise the issues as newsworthy. Go back to the 1700s...the trans-Atlantic trip usually resulted in two or three people dead from each trip.

“It’s just your basic 24-hour stomach flu. It’s been going around...”

There’s really no such thing as “stomach flu”. Influenza is not the culprit. What most people call “stomach flu” is really either bacterial food poisoning or most commonly food-borne infection from one of the noroviruses.

Either way, you’re probably looking at something that is transmitted via the fecal-oral route. Typically you’re dealing with food contamination as well.

There are a frighteningly large number of people out there who just dismiss their frequent bouts of gastroenteritis as “just the stomach flu”, when in reality they should be paying better attention to sanitary food prep (as well as good personal hygiene).

Cruise ships are a classic playground for norovirus infections because due to the common food prep areas once you get a little speck of infected fecal matter or vomit in the kitchen, then the everyone onboard the ship is going to be evacuating from both ends in short order and there won’t hardly be a surface left untouched.

It’s really a hardy little virus that can survive for weeks on a surface, infect a person with just a handful of individual viruses, and can even aerosolize from vomit or diarrhea.

I swear some tourist flock to these cruise ships knowing already they have some form of a virus, and they deliberately try to get any part of their bodily fluids on items or in foods as much as possible, just like a firebug arsonist they then enjoy seeing the misery of others.
I bet there is even an underground forum somewhere that has threads on which cruise line to target, how to become a passive carrier, how to conveniently perform acts like double dipping spreads and dips, sneezing in the open and what kind of a passenger to target as the next carrier, they do it for entertainment.

It’s media bias. Stomach viruses go around hotels, restaurants, schools, government offices, etc. but it’s not the gleeful event that allows luxury travelers to get their comeuppance with a media story.

Just like they report priest abuses, but not public school teacher abuses.

So less that 10 percent of the passengers were affected.

My boyfriend and I took a Royal Caribbean cruise in October. The crew worked hard to keep things clean and there were hand sanitizer dispensers all over the place. Take the proper precautions and you don't get sick.

We just got off the Country Cruising cruise last Sunday on Norwegian Cruise Lines. My wife and I have been fighting a cold ever since. The only casualty during the cruise was Trace Adkins falling off the wagon and being flown to rehab. There was a lot of that going round.

Hand sanitizers aren’t effective against norovirus, unless you buy one of the brands made specifically to do so.

I cruise on my own boat but.......we have a 100 gallon water tank on board that literally doesn’t get used for anything except washing dishes. First thing I always tell everyone is.......don’t drink the water, there is plenty of bottled water and beer. ;)
We add the water additive that supposedly keeps it drinkable but I just don’t trust it. It sits too long.

Which ships have you been on that you’re reporting your experiences from?

My experience differs. Yes, the crew is from different nations (lots of Philippinos), but they aren’t third world, nor refuges. Food handling and hygiene vastly exceeds land-based US restaurants.

Actually, they are foreign registered to avoid union workers, and other onerous regulations.

But ships that call in the US are subject to US health and safety regulations.

I don’t know where you get this “below decks” nonsense from.

“avoid union workers”

Wrong. Where did you get that? No ship in a right to work State ever has to contend with unions, so your statement is blatantly false. The ships do have to contend with union dock workers anyway.

“I don’t know where you get this “below decks” nonsense from.”

Port inspectors. Health inspectors. Federal customs agents. That’s where.

"I think the ones with IPA are good against Noro. No?"

It's been a while since I read about sanitizers and Noro, so I did a little research.

According to what I read, the Norovirus is not killed by the ethyl alcohol sanitizers (Purell, Germ-X, etc.) because the glycerin in said products serves to protect the virus.

A couple of sources DID say that plain isopropyl alcohol will kill Norovirus, while others said that it will not.

Benzalkonium chloride and benzethonium chloride will do the trick, if you can find a sanitizer containing one of those ingredients. Also, a site called www.stopthestomachflu.com lists some specialized Noro-killing products.

Food handling and kitchens on board cruise ships are not inspected by any agency. It is not surprising that we've observed outbreak after outbreak.
