Newspaper boss says gun permit database idea was misfire
Fox News ^ | 26 jan 2014 | Joshua Rhett Miller

Posted on 01/26/2014 5:34:25 AM PST by rellimpank

A national newspaper chain never intended to create a multi-state database of gun owners with permits allowing them to carry concealed weapons according to its top executive, who told FoxNews.com a "poorly crafted" internal memo erroneously indicated such an idea was being planned. The memo -- sent by a top content editor to various editors at Civitas Media, which owns about 100 newspapers in 11 states, with 1.6 million in total circulation -- laid out a plan for an enterprise project that would use public information requests to establish the database. But Civitas President and CEO Michael Bush, in an email after FoxNews.com reported the story on Friday, stated that the memo should not have been sent and that the notion of such a project had been "rejected" upon consideration. “Civitas Media never had any plans or intentions of publishing in print or online lists of holders of 'conceal and carry' permits," Bush wrote to FoxNews.com. “Nor will Civitas Media develop databases of permit holders. A poorly crafted internal memo meant to highlight editorial discussions and planning incorrectly indicated that such a database was being planned; it has been considered and rejected.” The Jan. 19 memo raised the prospect of a much larger version of a controversial project carried out by in 2012 by a New York state newspaper that included an online map identifying gun owners in two counties by name and address. The aborted Civitas project would have "examine[d] the explosion of ‘conceal and carry’ gun permits across the U.S.,” wrote Jim Lawitz, Civitas’ director of content, in an e-mail first obtained by the Buckeye Firearms Association. “Through public records act requests, we will attempt to build state-by-state databases that list those who have the right to carry a concealed weapon.”

He is likely lying, intending to quietly compile the database anyway. So efforts should be made to “identify the compilers” who make FOIA requests for such lists, and at the slightest hint of such effort, giving Civitas both barrels, as it were.

why isn’t this information protected information?

me thinks we should start contacting our local elected officials to enact legislation to prevent this kind of “database” collection.

if we can’t get the names of welfare recipients, why can we get the names of constitutionally protected individuals exercising their rights?

I think he’s lying.

It should be a law that anybody who makes a blanket open records request for a state’s concealed carry permits list must be published in all state newspapers.

The penis of an HIV Positive man is just as dangerous and lethal as a firearm.

But suggest propose the creation a national database of HIV positive men, complete with their address and links to maps to find out where they live (just applying the same standards Libs have for guns, right?) and watch what happens ...

Maine passed a law after the NY fiasco that keeps information on CCW holders private (well, as private as it can get when in the hands of the state). The Unified Democrat Maine press (largely owned & controlled by Rep. Pingree’s husband) was making steps in the direction of doing a similar stunt when the state passed the law.

Maybe "penal" colonies should be set up for them.

More over why have we allowed our second amendment right to protect ourselves from out of control governments to be infringed?

Sssssshhhhhhhhhhhh . . . . . . . . Don't tell anyone. But when ObamaCare is fully implemented this list will exist along with lists on any other health issue you would care to data mine for.

“if we can’t get the names of welfare recipients, why can we get the names of constitutionally protected individuals exercising their rights?”

People who have concealed carry *licenses* are NOT exercising their RIGHTS.

The exercising of RIGHTS does not involve training, applications, and fees. You would do well to recognize that.

“...a “poorly crafted” internal memo erroneously indicated such an idea was being planned.

The memo — sent by a top content editor to various editors at Civitas Media,...”

the editor mistakenly saved the original memo... in the form of an email message..and one early morning while it was still open on his desktop... hit SEND by mistake...

Ya I’ll buy that!!

In a sane America the 2nd Amendment tells you this.

Wonder if those editors figured out that they aren’t the only ones that can build data bases...
