Texas hospital to take pregnant, brain-dead woman off ventilator (Update: It's been done)
CNN ^ | January 26, 2014 | Matt Smith and Jason Morris

A Texas hospital has agreed to remove a pregnant and brain-dead woman from a ventilator, after a wrenching court fight about who is alive, who is dead and how the presence of a fetus changes the equation.

Sunday's announcement came two days after a judge in Fort Worth ordered John Peter Smith Hospital to remove any artificial means of life support from Marlise Munoz, as her family had asked. The hospital had said it was following a state law that requires hospitals to maintain life-sustaining treatment for a pregnant patient.

That was the information released Thursday from the affidavits filed by the Munoz family. Also, the husband stated his wife no longer ‘smelled’ like herself. She smelled like death and when he tried to hold her hand, bones broke.

First, I admire your impassioned post. It is good that you want to ask yourself “what is the right thing to do in God's eyes”...but who shall presume to know God's mind? Of course, we all know the 10 Commandments, and our religious leaders try to tell us what God wants from us. But, do we really know?

In this case, I believe that God intended for this woman to die, but man intervened. As a result, this woman and child's families have had to know, since around Thanksgiving, that the woman was technically dead. She was being kept alive, by the hospital, in an attempt to keep the baby alive.

I am a woman, the mother of two. If I were in this woman's condition, and I knew the medical issues of the child (you can look for other threads to see those details) I would be horrified to be treated as nothing more than a piece of meat, acting as an incubator for a child that will/would most likely die.

In the meantime, what about this woman's family? They have had to put their grieving process on hold. They know she's dead, they know she's not coming back to them. But instead of planning a funeral and getting on with the process of grieving, they are instead being demonized.

Really, this is none of our business. This is not a woman making a conscience decision to abort her child when the child was 13 weeks. This is not the result of any action by any man. This was God's decision, as are all decisions when it comes to life and death. Just because we can extend the “life” of a person due to extreme medical procedures does not mean we should. There is such a thing as “quality of life”.

And before you ask, yes, I am firmly anti-abortion and fervently PRO-life. Recent life events have helped me clarify my stands on life and death. In the end, as in the beginning, it's God's call.

I do stand with you on your call to bring our government back to God.

I can understand the woman being brain dead and all, but how can the family allow the baby to be killed

The article only said "the fetus was not viable." I wish more had been explained on that, but I have very low expectations for CNN.

What we just witnessed was an abortion taking place, that child was murdered..all of this about the baby being deformed, is there an ultra sound to prove that? This baby had a heart beat and now he or she is dead because for whatever reason the husband decided that he didn’t want to give the baby a chance at life. I can’t understand what the family is going through its tragic, but the baby is this woman’s legacy, I cant understand why they wouldn’t want the baby to at least have a chance at life

What is your evidence that the actions were not God’s will?

Shouldn't the doctors also verify the death of the fetus?

No its In the meantime, what about this woman’s baby..

the family are all grownups and could look after themselves..

that little innocent baby that the family wanted to kill was helpless and in need of someone to care enough to help her...

but the family wanted her dead...

Both the hospital and family agreed before Wallace’s ruling that Marlise Munoz meets
the criteria to be considered brain-dead — which means she is dead both medically
and under Texas law — and that her fetus, at about 23 weeks, could not be born
alive this early in pregnancy.

Be fair, what if the child was born deformed and needed constant care throughout their life, who pays for that?

Are you willing to condemn the family to that?

I know many do knowingly give birth to children with defects, even though they know they are beforehand, and they give the child as much love and care and are willing to sacrifice for them, they are to be greatly admired.....But that was their choice.

Do we really want the force of government to make people choose that path against their will?

We’re not talking here about abortion for mere convenience. I’m sure the family wanted nothing more than to have their wife survive and give birth to a healthy child. I will not condemn them, they have enough to deal with without the invective being heaped upon them.

It’s a tough call here, and I respect the arguments from both sides. But I believe in this one particular case, the right course was ultimately taken. But as the family said after the ruling, “We didn’t win anything.”

Actually if you read the details, the baby has deteriorated drastically with multiple severe deformities and was highly unlikely to survive.

They wanted to kill the baby. That’s all there is to it.

One can only wonder why.

If you read the details the baby was deteriorating, had severe deformities including hydrocephalus that were not compatible with life. This is not the easy decision it seemed. No one is more pro life than I am, and I cannot fault the family for this decision. They need our prayers as Im sure it was gut wrenching.

I understand its just hard, I value life so much, I wanted to see that child born, to at least see if he could have had a normal existence..sometimes doctors can be wrong and the child might have been born normal, I guess now we will never know
