Warning issued on killer heroin: Deadly batch of heroin kills at least 17 in area [barf alert]

Experts are warning about a potent and deadly batch of heroin that is suspected in the deaths of at least 17 people in Allegheny and surrounding counties during the past week.

One local medical examiner is calling the outbreak of overdoses a "major public health crisis."

Medical examiners suspect heroin, in stamp bags marked in red ink with the word "Theraflu," is causing deadly overdoses because it contains the powerful narcotic fentanyl.

Allegheny County officials issued a warning about the deadly combination on Friday, when nine people died of suspected overdoses, but since then, county medical examiner Karl Williams said five more fatalities have come through his door, showing signs of an overdose.

I was just in Walmart the other day looking for Theraflu for my wife and the pharmacist said it was no longer manufactured so I buy Alka-Seltzer Plus which appeared to be the closest thing to Theraflu. Two days later, I see a commercial for Alka-Seltzer Plus asking “Can’t find Theraflu? Try Alka-Seltzer Plus”. Hmmmm.

“Addiction is not a choice. I’ve seen a lot of good people taken by the grips of it.

They weren’t morally weak in character or any of that other BS”

Unless the addiction happens as the result of someone being forcibly tied down and injected with heroin, it most certainly is the logical result of a choice. I'll concede that there are some that become addicted as a result of their trying to alleviate physical pain.
The vast majority become addicted because they sought to get high.

There is no "major public health crisis."

Unless you consider that for the democrat party, "every vote counts"...

Just when the prisons were complaining they could no longer buy the juice for lethal injections, the free market comes along to fill the void :-)

But the death of the voter usually isn’t a significant obstacle in the eyes of the Democrat Party.

No one is forced to use the stuff. If they don’t use it they aren’t affected. I’m trying, but I can’t feel any sympathy for users.

I’ve read the article and the comments (through 27) and just can’t come up with any reason why a drug oeverdose death is a bad thing.

These people (most probably every single one of them) Chose to take the first injection of this drug. They chose to take the first pill of whatever drug lead them into this and they chose to smoke the pot that lead them into the drug culture in the first place.

These people chose to destroy their lives and die. How is it a bad thing when they finally do? I’m sure they were given the chance to get clean. It’s not like we’ve not been banging the “don’t do drugs” drum for the last 30 years.

This was just a small cleansing of the gene pool

This is one reason places like Singapore execute drug traffickers.

It was their CHOICE to take that first hit of heroin.

Don’t put words in my mouth. You know very well what I meant. I am a cold warrior, so don’t talk to me about the Soviet Union.

I had thyroid surgery 3 years ago. They prescribed some pain killer. I took one but did not like the side affects, so I stopped and just put up with the pain for a week. I worked in the medical dept in the joint, so I saw my share of OD deaths. These nerds liked their methadone too.

Yes sir Yakov. What did he say, in America, you can always find a party. In Soviet Union, party always finds you. I wonder if he ever went back to Russia?

I understand your points and it is true. BUT, it is also true that the addiction is a result of many small prior decisions.

Hmmm is right. I wonder whether Alka-Seltzer and Theraflu are made by the same pharmaceutical company?

Even as we oppose and condemn addiction, addicts themselves are often salvageable, and even when they prove to be not salvageable, they still merit concern and protection for humane and moral reasons.

My view towards these people is slightly different than yours. I see them as having moved on to a better life. One where they aren’t addicted to anything. Therefore I don’t feel sorrow for them having killed themselves through a foolish mistake.
