According to reports from Politico, Southwest Florida Congressman Trey Radel is resigning from Congress.
Radel pleaded guilty to cocaine possession in November and was sentenced to one-year probation.
He also just completed a stint in rehab.

The GOP Establishment sure seems to be more aligned with the DNC than anything else.
Is it possible he is still struggling with addiction demons?
The Florida media is gloating....the GOP has forced a conservative out of office, whereas Democrats who commit similar offenses are made into heroes (see any Kennedy).
Why now? Is the other shoe about to drop?
UH——I’m having trouble trying to figure out why we would want anything to do with this guy I’m thinking he thought he can hide his problem by calling himself a Tea Party guy. They’re not generally known as cocaine addicts ...
Conservatives have to know that misbehavior will be publicized. Cocaine use is prohibitive to representing constitutional conservatives. He did the correct thing. Conservatives have time to find someone to take his place.
I’m sorry, but I could not support someone in political office who is an admitted felon.
It is sad, and I sincerely wish him well and God speed, but we need to remember our principles. It is forgetting about them and winning for winning sake that has got us in this mess in the first place.
Yeah that would be my suspicion. Addiction recovery is hard enough as it is and its even harder when you’re surrounded by other users.
With the utter lack of morality in DC it wouldn’t surprise me one bit that others would deliberately attempt to shove him off the wagon.
I’m with you. A guy who can’t control his schlong, his craving for drugs, his temper, etc. usually cannot be counted on to control much of anything else.
Gimme a break!!! The Tea Party should have nothing to do with this guy! Good Riddance to bad rubbish!
West should run for his seat.
I’m not defending this guy at all.
That said, my comment is directed to the FACT that the GOP Establishment acts more like the DNC when it comes to attacking real Conservatives.
The Florida GOP Establishment went completely insane when Charlie Crist was soundly rejected by Florida Conservatives and went after ALLEN WEST as a result.
A guy who cant control his schlong, his craving for drugs, his temper, etc. usually cannot be counted on to control much of anything else.
As well he should.
People who use cocaine are some of the worst people on earth.
Should have stuck to tea.
He’s my congressman. I supported him enthusiastically. No more. He’s an idiot. Tossed away a great importunity. Now he’s nothing but a liability. Will be replaced by another conservative.
He could run for Mayor of Toronto.
Yep a lot of “noses like Hoovers” in DC Land.
Yes, but only while we are using. I’m recovered. I’m swell now.
Yeah, I only buy that if it is a person who is constant in his bad behavior....men like Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Gerry Studds.
Everyone screws up, and everyone has a chance to get their heart and mind right. The evidence for this guy is that he was caught in a sting, genuinely repented, and immediately took steps to rectify the situation.
The voters ought to get to decide if he should stay. This isn’t what happened....the establishment shoved him out.
I still remember when the establishment GOP in D.C. and Florida tried to clear the deck for their chosen man in the Senate—Charlie Crist. But the VOTERS told them to shove it, and we removed a RINO from the party.
In this case, the GOP-E won.
Plenty of barely functional drunks in DC as well.
Hmmm, interesting. Could this be brought about by the Chicago Way?
I wouldn't make any comparisons with Allen West. Yes, they both got abandoned or worse by the GOPe, but to generalize the two together does a great disservice to Allen West.
I agree with you on that point!
I wouldn’t this man in Congress either
I wouldn’t claim him for the TEA Party for sure
“Im sorry, but I could not support someone in political office who is an admitted felon.”
So if they lied and hid they were a felon it it would be better?
My thinking is that the majority of us are probably all un-prosecuted felons of some sort. You saying that you do not believe in redemption and restoration? You’re that righteous? Just curious.
I am not defending the guy he needs to go. I just don’t think past behavior is always a predictor of future behavior. Yet without a life changing event it is usually the the best one.
Did he repent AFTER he got caught?
He should resign. We would be appalled if he were a Democrat and did not resign. He took cocain while in office, end of story.
He’s a drug addict who doesn’t dererve to be in a seat of power. Get over it.
Frankly, I don’t want druggies representing me. I’m sure many in his feel the same way.
As in, "Conservative Republican Trey Radel, a Republican from Florida, resigned after the Republican was arrested for cocaine use by a Conservative.".
Whereas, you can read a stack of newspaper articles about Dems in trouble and never find a single mention of their party affiliation.
Unrelated, but good news..did you see that Renee Elmers just got herself a primary challenger?
Yep, me too, even at the highest, or lowest, of positions, depending on one’s perspective of course.
Agreed. He shouldn’t be holding office.
Byron Donalds can run again now. I liked him the last time.
OK, that’s a good point. According to my Christian Religion, we are all sinners before God. T’is Grace that saves us...
However, the politicians that represent me must be of the best possible character and judgement. They RUN for office, and struggle against each other to be considered by the voters to be the best. If one has issues, he/she should stand aside and let a better take his/her place. Otherwise, OUR political opponents will use this to assault and batter our cause, and it is our cause that must prevail.
When I was in the military, I had a very good friend, a SMSgt (E-8) like me, who had already served 20 years, get caught driving through the Tyndall AFB gate with a Blood Alcohol of .218. Yes, he was a great guy, great leader, level headed, but he chose to go golfing with old friends and had way too many at the clubhouse afterward and then got behind the wheel. He told me later he didn’t even remember leaving the clubhouse, let alone driving back to Tyndall, and I believed him. I may have even drunk too much and driven myself(oh yes, lots of times—before they court-martialed for it). Still, he was court-martialed and kicked out. Lost his position, pension, everything. We all hated it like hell, but we all knew the consequences, too. When the consequences were spelled out to me, and the military got on the drunk driving-no-tolerance stick, I stopped drinking and driving.
As I said before with the Representative, it is very sad, and I wish him God speed, but he can no longer represent.
“Byron Donalds can run again now.”
My biggest fear, though, is that RINOish ex-Congressman Connie Mack IV will run to reclaim his old seat in spite of his embarrassing performance in the 2012 U.S. Senate election.
Ugh, I pray to God Mack does not return. The guy is a disaster.
Well, don’t look now, but Mack is hinting at a comeback: http://www.nationaljournal.com/hotline-on-call/trey-radel-resignation-starts-scramble-for-safe-republican-seat-20140127
For violating contraband law? LOL.
Maybe that one is over my head, but I do not understand why you think that is funny, sargon. Please explain.
If Mack declares, Radel should rescind his resignation.
