While Britains other major parties back a minimum wage hike, it is Conservative support that is most surprising. Just 15 years ago, Conservatives vigorously opposed the very creation of a minimum wage. Just last autumn, they balked at pleas for a substantial increase.
But this month, the nations top economic officialknown as the austerity chancellor for his cheerless calls to cut budgets and benefitsstartled the political establishment by declaring that it is time to spread the wealth.

Exactly. Same in Canada pretty much. “Conservative” definitely means something very different from Nation to Nation.

The Tories have learned that once you agree to a minimum wage in principle, there is nothing but political downside to opposing future increases.

a $12 min wage is likely to pass here in WA state. The “argument” is that anything less is not a living wage.

Currently £6.31 (little over $10 per hour), and they want to raise it. Didn’t see what they want to raise it to.

British Conservatives are not very similar at all to our idea of conservatism.
