2014 COPO Camaro No. 001 Fetches $700,000 At Barrett-Jackson

In case you missed it during the FOX networks coverage of the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale classic car auction over the weekend, Chevrolet Performance’s first 2014 COPO Camaro factory race car, numbered No. 1 of 69 (VIN 001 to be exact), was auctioned off for charity, bringing in an impressive $700,000 winning bid— more than seven times the sticker price of a typical COPO.

Many of our readers may recognize this as the very same COPO that was unveiled at the SEMA Show as a preview to the 2014 model year build, and was also on display in the Chevrolet Performance booth at the PRI Show in Indianapolis. This particular car features GM’s LS-based 350 cubic inch small block with a 2.9L screw-type Whipple supercharger.

After making the rounds in front of the industry and media at SEMA and PRI, COPO Camaro No. 1 was off to Scottsdale, where 100% of its sale price benefitted the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, an organization that works with wounded soldiers to help them overcome injuries sustained in battle, including loss of limbs and paralysis. The organization aims to get the wounded soldiers into competitive athletic events though physical training with specialized adaptive devices, including hand-crank wheelchairs.

NASCAR team owner and avid collector Rick Hendrick was reportedly in a lively bidding war for the car, but an identified bidder ended up with it after the hammer dropped.

This particular COPO is the only 2014 model thats has been produced thus far, and it does indeed carry significance and rarity beyond its number tag, as according to the brass at Chevrolet, it will be the one and only car finished in the sleek “Silver Ice” color.

The COPO Camaro’s are purpose-built by hand for racers for the NHRA’s Super Stock and Stock Eliminator categories in GM’s Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant, with NHRA-certified roll cages, solid rear axles, racing suspension, a compete aftermarket fuel system, racing seats, and much more. Engines packages for 2014 are expected to include the supercharged 350, a naturally aspirated 427, along with naturally aspirated 350 and 396 cubic inch offerings.

Video at link. 100% of the proceeds went to the Wounded Warriors project. I must be getting old. I remember when you could buy 100 brand new high performance Camaros for $700k.

I am glad to see Ford, Chevy and Chrysler giving the people what they want, but cannot understand these car compays to save mylife.
Chrysler has a success with the Challenger and the Charger, so WTF are they doing with the Dart?

Good cause. And at 700K, that car will never have to sleep out in the rain.

Yep, but I was referencing the base model. Still 100hp over my old 1986 GT with the 302/5.0 liter V-8. That was a good car...

That COPO is a pretty badass machine, but I remember several years ago when Ol’ Shel auctioned SuperSnake #2. As I recall it was $5.5M or thereabouts.

And a thousand times better looking than the crap they call a Camaro. There is a reason the Shelby is worth more.

WTF are they doing with the Dart?

Caliph Baraq has mandated 54 mpg by 2024.

You've only seen the beginning.

so WTF are they doing with the Dart?

They needed SOMETHING to put the Fiat platform on, and the Colt name wouldn't do the trick.

Seriously, I have owned a half-dozen Dodge Darts. ('66x2,'71, '73,'74,'76) Darts always hit above their weight, roomy without being behemoths (though I like behemoths), and stressed reliability, simplicity and value above doodads.

Yes, you can make them go fast, but that aunt's pea soup green Dodge Dart with the vinyl roof was also many teen's first cars.

What other car is most famous for its entry level engine? (Slant-six (225), not counting the smaller 170 ci version)?

Someone should buy the Plymouth name and molds, make a Valiant, and do it right.

It is also the last Mustang that will be named a Shelby. I was fortunate to be able to procure one last year. It sure is fun to drive.

I wonder what 1 of the 2 original 1969 ZL1 Corvette’s would bring.

I believe James Garner owned one for a while.
