home of the high-speed autobahn, is perhaps one of the few countries that has had as intense a love affair with the automobile as the U.S. But in an effort to go green, the country's second-largest city is studying ways to eliminate cars by 2034.

A very unhelpful excerpt.
It might be nice to have the city/cities identified.
The War Against the Car (against drivers, really).
Guess I'll be taking my dirt bike to work in -6 degree weather tomorrow.
No problem. After the government destroys the economy, nobody will be able to afford cars. Except for party bosses and commisars.
Ban government not autos!
They’re talking about Germany and the UK, as far as I could see.
Those people institutionally and intestinally hate automobiles ..... and, I gradually figured out, they hate the freedom and mobility that cars afford people, to escape the little cages the Bauhouse boys would have us living in, like the 500-to-700-square-foot rat cages LeCorbusier was designing for French peasants back in the 20's. How good of them to think of us.....
Let’s just start with government autos.
What, and pollute the pristine atmosphere? Baby killer!! Take the train, be redeemed!
Sounds OK to me.
I can't foresee any possible need to go into one of those filthy cesspools, ever again in my life.
Fine, more gas for me and my gas guzzler.
Germany is half the size of Texas with 5 times as many people and a good public transportation system. Austin, TX, treehugger headquarters, can’t get people to ride the new $$$$$ rail transportation. What might work in Hamburg ain’t no way gonna work in Texas.
When William F. Buckley ran for Mayor of New York in 1965, this was one of his suggestions for Manhattan.
My first car was a ‘68 VW bus, bought while I was playing Army in Germany.
You can keep the trains, there or here.
Of course, God made the earth utterly "sustainable" and man occupies a very small faction of the planet. "Sustainability" is a myth but no matter - it will be driven into the psyche of people the way "discrimination" has - all to weaken people's resolve to keep their individual freedom.
The ONLY people in LA who take mass transit are the indigent, welfare peeps and all around bad scene people.
Gees, no need to repeat yourself.
No personal transportation - Makes it easier to keep the indentured servants on the plantation and under control.
That’s just it; most of the major European metropolitan areas have long-established public transit, and generally speaking - having used various public transit schemes throughout Europe - I’d say it’s quite adequate. Personally, I liked the system in Tokyo; that’s probably my favorite.
Berlin, or Prague, or Warsaw, or Istanbul certainly isn’t Houston, or Los Angeles, or anywhere else for that matter. I’d have to say that NYC does it quite well, but then again, that’s a relatively small geographical area with high population density.
I know Portland, OR has been floundering for years with their light-rail scheme. It’s fine in the urban core of downtown, but that’s about it. TriMet’s insane dream of expanding the system to resemble something akin to the Berlin S-Bahn system is laughable at best, and ‘shroom-inspired lunacy at worst.
Leftism is motivated by envy, and surprisingly most of it is nothing more than size envy. An automobile is the second largest possession most Americans own, the largest being a free standing house. They hate that even more. Big trains and skyscrapers are their phallic symbol responses.

I’ve read that ancient ROME banned chariots on the streets in the daylight.
See what that got them?
I dated a Serbian woman who says she thought America’s car culture was foolish and wasteful before she came here.
Today she has a Toyota Tundra.
Can you make a Prius bounce on the rear axle?
You must have a car in LA. Period.
I feel sorry for people who come here not knowing that. They drop like flies.
Is She HOT?
One of the things they don’t tell ya about those eastern European chicks.
here in the country we could go back to horses. I always wanted a horse :)
I’m sure this has crossed de Blasio’s mind in NYC... ban autos, because nothing says “equality” better than ordering everyone to use buses and trains.
Step 2 - build special tunnels for all public transportation around, in and out of the city.
Step 3 - Build a wall and control the tunnels so citizens can't escape.
