President Barack Obama will lay out a strategy for getting around a divided Congress and boosting middle-class prosperity on Tuesday in a State of the Union speech that reflects some scaled-back legislative ambitions after a difficult year.
Obama will make clear in his 9 p.m. EST address that he is willing to bypass U.S. lawmakers and go it alone in some areas by announcing a series of executive actions that do not require congressional approval.
White House officials said Obama will announce new executive actions on retirement security and job training to help middle-class workers expand economic opportunity.
"In this year of action, the president will seek out as many opportunities as possible to work with Congress in a bipartisan way. But when American jobs and livelihoods depend on getting something done, he will not wait for Congress," Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said in an email to supporters sketching out the themes of the speech.
With three years left in office, Obama has effectively reduced for now his ambitions for grand legislative actions.

Though I can't stomach hearing this Mussolini wannabe's voice, watching to see which Repubicans give him an ovation when he makes this statement may be worth it.
Just may have to take some Phenergan before the speech.
just watch who applauds wildly when the president of the USA announces his intent to subvert the will of the people by replacing their elected representatives at all levels, with a pen and a phone
Article V before it is too late.
Don’t watch it live. They are hoping to draw a large audience and tout the ratings as a sign of 0bama’s popularity and his support by the American people.
If the Repubs aren’t sitting their hands or booing I’ll be pissed.
Dear Leader is officially a Tyrant.
Every Democrat congressman who sits and claps like a trained seal for Obama’s blatantly un-American dictatorial power-grab should be voted out of office in the fall. They shouldn’t get to flush the Constitution that Americans, much better than they, have fought and died to preserve since the first American Revolution.
Republicans ought to either not attend or walk out of the SOTU the moment Obama says he’ll usurp their legislative powers.
There ought to be consequences for a president advocating criminal activities.
I was informed that “policy disputes” did not rise to the level of impeachment.
Southerland will hold a local town meeting this coming weekend. Absent a change in his attitude, I just may sit out the mid-term election. Why bother to vote if all power is in the hands of El Presidente?
Correct. Just follow the live thread here at FR.
Hussein will stand in front of the House and Senate and tell both to shove it. All drama Obama.
If The One makes dictator talk, Pubs should walk out. But they won’t.
If the dais is not stormed and this little tyrant is not dragged out from behind the lectern and imprisoned to await his trial... well... I would hardly be shocked.
I have an acquaintance that is in the Secret Service... used to actually be on the Hillary detail. I worry about his safety.
“I just may sit out the mid-term election.”
May I remind you that many Freepers here did the same thing and got Barry elected a second term?
The Bamster will remain in office regardless.
I agree, but you don’t have to be like many here on FR that are proud to tell you that “Romney is just as bad”.
I was planning on that. I will also go to Mark Levin on line and listen. He usually does a mystery science threater 3000 style running commentary for the SOTU.
The Clown’s numbers indicate he is not popular with the masses....His announcement that he wants to rule by dictate will only hurt him and his party (read “Hitlery”) in the long (and short) run.
He is doing this because his ideology is failing....He counted on the economy being better no matter how much he plundered from the private sector. That isn’t happening, Americans KNOW he is failing, and he refuses to acknowledge the truth.
His grasps for fascist leader-like power is desperation. Heck, did you see that poll on Obamacare? 30%.of DEMOCRATS in that poll want it repealed.
Boehner and McConnell are complicit enablers. Every day they fail to confront the would be dictator, they strengthen Obama until we reach the day when he can no longer be limited at all.
Sorry, but there just aren't enough FReepers to accomplish something like that.
There are too few real conservatives in government anymore. Mainly because the establishment tends to weed them out, and by nature those who seek power over others tend to be establismentarians. But I think always the choice should be the lessor of two evils, because inaction is often the worst of choices. Thomas Paine called government itself a choice of lesser evils.
There are many here that are proud enough to remind everyone of it, regardless of the numbers.
If he spend a dime without Congress’ approval, he MUST be impeached.
Congress must impeach the tyrant before he becomes so powerful that he will not be possible to stop.
We must get out of the two-party, voting is everything mindset. National elections have taken on the attributes of mere sporting events, who is on offense/defense, celebrities, who will make next year's player draft, etc. Meanwhile, what is left of our republic suffers.
While I many sit out the midterm election, I doubt I could sit out the presidential election, despite the increasing irrelevancy of elections.
Einstein had a term for expecting different results to emerge from doing the same thing. Restoration of our republic and freedoms cannot emerge from DC.
If we are to restore freedom, our only hope is to reduce focus on national elections and direct more efforts toward our states.
Until an Article V state amendment convention restores federalism and returns far more power to the states, we are doomed to a dictatorship.
I read through dozens of comments counting the pro/anti Obama comments. They were overwhelmingly anti-Obama. Don’t know if that’s the venue or not. I stopped when I realized most of the pro-Obama notes were by one author, Aaron.
Oops. I meant to ping you to #27.
I can’t disagree with anything you say. To get some real “change”(I hate that term), we need to get the half of the country off of entitlements. That is what is killing us.
The imposition of Obamacare has changed everything, and Obama’s narcissism doesn’t allow him to see what’s happened.
He is no longer trusted by the American people.
He is no longer seen in the same light as he was one year ago. Barack Obama no longer has gravitas with his own party. Because of Obamacare, none of them can even campaign with him.
This makes tonight’s speech different. I think he will be making a big mistake to use the words “pen” and “phone” tonight. Whether Republicans turn their backs, or walk out makes no difference. Pay attention to the Democrats.
He’s killing the party. Do they see it or not?
The undocumented Indonesian Tyrant by Fraud SPEAKS.
The undocumented Indonesian Tyrant by Fraud SPEAKS.
“Hes killing the party. Do they see it or not?”
Obama and his minions don’t care if they kill the Democrat party. “Organizing For Action” was not founded to benefit the Democrat party, it exists only to push Obama’s agenda. That’s what I find most frightening about this situation. As mis-guided as Bill Clinton might have been, at the end of the day he was a party guy and would mold his positions for the good of the party.
I hope someone stands up and yells “We’re not going to have it!”
We’ve got to fix the Executive Order issue big time. He’s abusing the crap out of it.
If I want to watch some amateur liars, I’ll watch Cheaters. But if I want to watch the pros I know to tune in whenever his majesty is in front of the teleprompter.
Obama is Law-Less because Republicans are BALL-LESS!!
And John Boehner cries.
Not voting is how we got the DICKTATOR AGAIN!! Purists are not lifting a hand to stop the DESTRUCTION and TAKEOVER of America......THANKS, Purists.
Sarah Palin would be my first choice.
Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) will deliver the Republican Address to the Nation. She will show the nation the Republicans have no war on women, which will be the siren call by the Hildebeast when she runs for President. Rodgers will be fantastic.
I will take the time to practice folding fitted sheets.
He is in a state of delusion.
Palin-the McCain lover?
I wonder if these purists are not infiltrators meant to divide and conquer the Republicans. If they are infiltrators, they are Communists. Communists work day and night to put forth their diabolical plots.
If you are anti-abortion, that is considered to be a ‘war on women’!
