“And how many of the 39% want immigration reform to mean more enforcement of our laws, secure borders, and a decrease in the number of legal immigrants who take jobs from Americans and depress wages? “
Actually, the definition of “reform” has come to mean “citizenship.” So, probably not many. That’s the 39% of the population who see a world entirely different than the one conservatives see. (Their world contains fairy dust to power appliances and unicorns to power our cars.)
Actually, as someone who has worked on this issue for 7 years and lobbies on the Hill and Richmond for immigration reform, most Americans are very uniformed about the immigration issue and have no idea what comprehensive immigration reform really means.
For example, most have no idea as to how many legal immigrants actually enter each year. My organization had a booth at CPAC for four years and we found that even most of those more politically aware than the average citizen had no idea on how may legal immigrants came each year. The most common estimate was between 50,000 and 75,000. We commissioned a poll that contained questions that provided the official statistics and the responses were very revealing.
Most Americans will agree with the idea of "reform" and have no idea what reform encompasses including citizenship.
