Top Republicans to Call for Legal Status for Some Immigrants (Leaks from GOP Amnesty Plan)
NY Times ^ | 1/28/14 | JONATHAN WEISMAN and ASHLEY PARKER

Posted on 01/28/2014 11:02:53 AM PST by jimbo123

The House Republican leadership’s broad framework for overhauling the nation’s immigration laws will call this week for a path to legal status — but not citizenship — for many of the 11 million adult immigrants who are in the country illegally, according to aides who have seen the party’s statement of principles. For immigrants brought to the United States illegally as young children, the Republicans would offer a path to citizenship.

-snip-

House Republican leaders will circulate it at a three-day retreat for their members that begins Wednesday on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Several pro-immigration organizations that have been briefed on the guidelines say they are not intended to serve as a conservative starting point for future negotiations, but as a gauge of how far to the left House Republicans are willing to move.

The principles say that Republicans do not support a “special path to citizenship,” but make an exception for the “Dreamers,” the immigrants brought into the country illegally as children, quoting a 2013 speech by Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House majority leader. “One of the great founding principles of our country was that children would not be punished for the mistakes of their parents,” Mr. Cantor said at the time. “It is time to provide an opportunity for legal residence and citizenship for those who were brought to this country as children and who know no other home.”

Like moths to a flame.

Like a dog to its vomit (see The Gods of the Copybook Headings).

There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.

That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,

And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins

When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,

As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Not really. They're just no different than the Vichy French during the Nazi occupation. They sold their souls to Soros in hopes of getting nice apartments in Elysium once the statists have total control...

"The GOP wants to commit suicide for some reason."

Rational self-interest. They've been fed millions in campaign contributions, sweetheart insider trading deals, and promised further millions in lobbying/speaking fees after they leave office.

If any of them had an ounce of patriotism before they got to DC, the lobbyists beat it out of them before they got off the plane.

Traitorous scum.

Vent.

Call your legislators and just get honest. Don’t hold back.

(We would like to apologise for the way in which politicians are represented in this [post]. It was never our intention to imply that politicians are weak-kneed political time-servers who are concerned more with their personal vendettas and private power struggles than the problems of government, nor to suggest at any point that they sacrifice their credibility by denying free debate on vital matters in the mistaken impression that party unity comes before the well-being of the people they supposedly represent, nor to imply at any stage that they are squabbling little toadies without an ounce of concern for the vital social problems of today. Nor indeed do we intend that viewers should consider them as crabby ulcerous little self seeking vermin with furry legs and an excessive addiction to alcohol and certain explicit sexual practices which some people might find offensive. We are sorry if this impression has come across. Monty Python, back in the 1970s)

Still suicidal.

I can see Cantor, McCarthy, Flake, Portman, Hoeven, Corker, Kirk and several others simply switching to Democrat, claiming the "party of hate" has forced them to pull away.

The "several" others could become many others if they sense the tide is changing.

They don't care if their party commits suicide as long as they can continue to win elections.

The time to have stopped all this was during Bush II, but he left the door open for eight years.

I don't know what the answer is, but most of what I hear around here is obsolete and about a decade out of date.

Yet something absolutely must be done. Where I live, the battle is already lost, but the rest of the country still has a chance.

Yes. But I (and I think they) view it more as premeditated murder.

Obama and those closest to him hate our country.

Schumer, Reid, Pelosi and other clowns simply figure, 1) someone will get to be in charge, whatever is left (no pun intended); and 2) they got theirs already, so what the hell?

Otherwise the rule of law and thus the primacy of the US Constitution and most of the foundations of our society are dead.

The only thing worse than granting citizenship to 11 million illegal aliens, would be to grant them some sort of hazy work visa.

They wouldn't be able to vote so they wouldn't care what happens to the government. They would still be reluctant to speak up when crimes are committed in their neighborhoods for fear of losing their tentative status. They would still have to be cared for, free of charge, in ERs. They would most likely qualify for workers comp and unemployment and even Social Security, or would get these care of further liberal legislation.

We would turn America into another Europe.

Temporary work visas for a relatively small number of people in fields where there is truly a shortage of talent might make sense. But long term non-citizen status is a recipe for disaster.

The GOP wants to commit suicide for some reason.

No, you've got it all wrong. See, this is the lesser of two evils - that's why we need to vote for MORE squishy unprincipled candidates.

This ranks right up there with the genius of Justice Roberts declaring 0care constitutional because the mandate is a tax, so that more court cases can later be heard to say the law he said was constitutional is unconstitutional - pure genius!

Here's how it works: By voting for (R) candidates that support things like amnesty, abortion, queer "marriage," gun bans etc, they can pass laws that give us amnesty, abortion, queer "marriage," and gun bans.........this way the democrats won't be able to pass laws that give us amnesty, abortion, queer "marriage," and gun bans. And since it was (R) people that did it, that equals lesser of two evils and "severe" conservatism.

And in this way, the GOP will have a bigger tent and attract more voters, exampled by all the voters they detracted in 2012 using this same reasoning. See, lesser supporters = more votes. Jeesh, don't you know anything about politics?

/deranged broken glass GOPe supporter with battered wife syndrome

demonstrating who they're really beholden to.

They need to understand that this may well be the last vote any of them make in congress.

As far as I'm concerned just having an "R" beside your name is no qulification for my vote whatsoever.

I’m struck by the complete moral abdication at “National Review” and “Weekly Standard.”

They don’t object to Amnesty.

They object to the timing:

“It’s one of the few things that could actually disrupt what looks like a strong Republican year.”

And.....

“The last thing the party needs is a brutal intramural fight when it has been dealt a winning hand.”

So, this is the bone they throw to Conservatives?

If we promise to vote for them in 2014, they promise not to pass Amnesty until 2015?

Such a deal!

I’m through fighting this war against my own Party.

I’m not writing one more email to a Republican representative.

In the future, I will vote for Conservative state initiatives, and I will vote against local tax increases and bond issues.

But as to candidates, if the Republican Party cannot give me a Conservative to vote for, I will not vote at all.
