Great Caesar’s Ghost
National Review ^ | 1/28/2014 | Kevin D. Williamson

The annual State of the Union pageant is a hideous, dispiriting, ugly, monotonous, un-American, un-republican, anti-democratic, dreary, backward, monarchical, retch-inducing, depressing, shameful, crypto-imperial display of official self-aggrandizement and piteous toadying, a black Mass during which every unholy order of teacup totalitarian and cringing courtier gathers under the towering dome of a faux-Roman temple to listen to a speech with no content given by a man with no content, to rise and to be seated as is called for by the order of worship — it is a wonder they have not started genuflecting — with one wretched representative of their number squirreled away in some well-upholstered Washington hidey-hole in order to preserve the illusion that those gathered constitute a special class of humanity without whom we could not live.

It’s the most nauseating display in American public life — and I write that as someone who has just returned from a pornographers’ convention.

“Embrace the Suck of SOTU”

Not so long as a sock drawer remains unorganized, a shirt remains unironed, a catbox remains unscooped, or a refrigerator remains uncleaned.

This was a great article by the way and spot on.

Perhaps the greatest first paragraph I have read since the Firehat left us.

I remember the “Great Caesar’s Ghost” episode from when I was a kid, and I’ve seen it as an adult, too, although that was in the nineties, I think. Of course, Perry is haunted by the apparition he invokes, and at one point tries to escape from an airplane in flight, until Superman intervenes.

As I understand it, the show was an explanation for dropping the phrase from Perry White’s vocabulary, which they were doing because it was an oath, even if bowdlerized.

Outstanding article, and thanks for posting!

The State of the Union is only one example of the deepening, terrifying cult of the state that has taken root here.

I look at the disgusting, teary-eyed, floor-kissing fawning that offers up a standing ovation at Dear Leader's every pose and I find I can no longer criticize the poor sods in North Korea. The latter at least deserve the pity conferred on those who have been deprived by force of every vestige of human dignity. Our own little goose-steppers gave theirs away willingly.
