“Another interesting point to consider (I have been trying to find some info on this) in regards to an EMP; lots and lots of older homes in the U.S. with old school plaster walls and ceiling. Inside that plaster is metal mesh; kind of like a Faraday cage.”

Even if that would work (I doubt it) only disconnected devices would be spared. Your electrical lines will bring in the pulse very nicely, and fry all attached devices.

Devices inside a metal box, such as a safe, should be fine.

Sen. Cruz is exactly right about Iran.

Those who are cheerleading for the president's policy on Iran appear to hold two fundamental beliefs: (1) War with Iran is so utterly unthinkable as to make any alternative preferable; and (2) the best way to avoid war is through appeasement.

The first premise, I believe, is mistaken; although reasonable people may debate its merits.

The second premise, however--i.e. that appeasement is the best way to avoid war--is just downright silly. If the experience of Neville Chamberlain's "peace for our time" did not demonstrate that conclusively, one has to wonder just what might do so...

You don’t a ground burst would do any damage? Especially with a dirty bomb. New York City might be uninhabitable.

Iran attacks, One Boomer Sub will launch all her rockets and obliterate every major city in Iran, It will become a forgotten, Lost Civilization overnight. Maybe we will take out North Korean as well for helping out. I believe we should launch two strikes—one attack, then another in 48 hours to target any places we missed.

Not as long as one of Iran's own is in the WH.

If a nuke was detonated in a USA city would the perp likely be a country like Iran knowing it would be anihilated? Or would it be due to deception like the Reichstag fire, and a wanabee dictator, and those wanting an excuse to impose martial law and disarm Americans?

This will actually be fairly easy to discern. If it's a city in the midwest, it's an internal action. If it's New York, LA, or Seattle, it's probably enemy action.

If it's Detroit, would anyone even notice?

Oh, completely agree, anything “plugged in” is toast. Disconnected devices might be spared in such homes, might. Like I said, I’m still reading about it.

In that movie in Post 58, scroll ahead to 1:20:00 for the explosion in Charleston Harbor.

Not being a nuclear engineer, I’m still thinking that a ground-based explosion would be pretty nasty, too. Either way, I’d want to be 300-400 miles away, upwind, thankyouverymuch.

Sounds like that old Bob Newhart fake phone call when he was the president calling Moscow to apologize/warn that we had accidentally launched a nuke at them. Then he tells Nikita we’d like to make it up to you-—why don’t you take out Chicago? Nikita says that would make us two-up on the Russians.———Chicago still could use some re-development also.

"Why would China want to wipe out their best customer?"

Hey. They are not building that big navy and asserting control over Asia to take on France. Customer? Maybe they are thinking how we do it - we bomb and then rebuild. Make even more money.

The Chinese aren’t religious fanatics and they got a taste of capitalism. The Iranian government on the other hand has been lying about nuclear weapons from the beginning.

“The Iranians do not have intercontinental missile capability”

But they do have shipping capability and Long Beach and other ports are vulnerable.

“and a nuclear attack on U.S. cities would result in the end of Iran”

I’m not too sure about that. Wish I could be. With the big zero, democRATs, massive retaliation was never an option and they never would respond in kind.

As I see it, the big zero and democRATS would respond by imposing leaky sactions while whining to the UN, eventually getting some sort of strongly worded demarche. . .at best we could hope they would invade Iran followed quickly by pulling-out and then sending billions of dollars in aid to Iran for re-building.

From take-off at Dulles to the Pentagon is mere minutes.

Agreed; I too think “something” is going to happen and, if Iran can’t get an ICBM from the NORKs or ChiComms, they’ll sail a ship right into a major US city’s harbor and detonate it.

You mean the 4’ long, non-reflective missile (don't want the target to see you coming), with motor burn out after 7-10K feet (no smoke trail after that), that was (supposedly) seen tracking all the way to the aircraft over 20K feet in the air, seen by people on the beach at least 8-miles away?

End of thread hi-jack.

Have a nice day.

Oh please.

This is ridiculous on it’s face. He’s crawling to the neocons and AIPAC with this crapola. We had a decade of this cynical fear mongering and it got us a dead GOP and a police state.

This is very disappointing. But, not surprising (sigh).

>>>No one knows how an EMP explosion would work—would it really take out a whole section of the nation or would it be spotty—some with power, some without. Would it be a return to the 19th Century? Also, what about our ships at sea and subs? Would they launch at any attacker—we would know from where it came and blast with H-Bombs any nation that attacked us—maybe take out others as well. We have B-52s, B-1s and all sorts of rockets. I would doubt if any nation would risk the fall out of such an attack. Iran would simply ceast to exist—maybe take out Pakistan and North Korea to boot.<<<<

I think you’re spot on in this most basic way - once an attack is launched, the results are unpredictable. My own belief is that any EMP attack would be spotty at best, which is actually worse than a total shutdown, as those areas or individuals with remaining power and facilities would have to deal with a crazed push from those who would be affected.

There’s options that seems improbable, but could happen. Let’s say there’s an EMP attack from Islamic terrorists. Maybe Obama would go on television and announce a deathbed conversion to Islam. Maybe Obama would decide not to retaliate. Maybe the armed forces would attempt - successfully or unsuccessfully - a coup against the executive branch. Maybe the Chinese would be invited to “rebuild.”

All I can say with certainty is once these sorts of events start, the outcome is impossible to predict.

We can probable survive without those two cities.

We likely would but life as we know it getting national information if we lost Times Square would change drastically. Would not be hearing Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Mark Levin, national cable for some time unless you live in the city from which they broadcast.

Unfortunately, if signals were repared they'd likely have to go thru Washington DC (which is worse). I can see it now "hate speech no longer allowed on the airwaves".

I saw it...it was a intensely bright orange light moving up so fast it appeared to defy gravity. From the angle I saw, it was heading north 80 degrees from the horizon when looking due east from the new jersey shore. BTW, a lot of other people saw it too. It prompted them to take out a full page ad in the NYT. Regardless of whys and wherefors, that plane was downed by a missile. I saw it!

The attack would make even Obama unable to prevent a counter strike. If he tried, he would be pulled from the White House and the Army would take over. Any nation who supported the Terrorists gould would suffer atomic attack. No nation would stand in our way out of fear we would start WW 3. As for the re-building it would all be Americans—Chinese would be forced to pay for it only -— When done the USA would be a very different land.
