Democrats: Cede the House to save the Senate

With Democrats’ grasp on the Senate increasingly tenuous — and the House all but beyond reach — some top party donors and strategists are moving to do something in the midterm election as painful as it is coldblooded: Admit the House can’t be won and go all in to save the Senate.

Their calculation is uncomplicated. With only so much money to go around in an election year that is tilting the GOP’s way, Democrats need to concentrate resources on preserving the chamber they have now. Losing the Senate, they know, could doom whatever hopes Barack Obama has of salvaging the final years of his presidency. Continue Reading

The triage idea is taking hold in phone conversations among donors and in strategy sessions between party operatives. Even some of the people who have invested the most to get House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi back into the speaker’s chair are moving in that direction.

“There is no question that Democratic donors are shifting towards the Senate in 2014. They will continue to support Nancy, but everyone agrees that the emphasis is going to be on the Senate,” said Joe Cotchett, a prominent San Francisco trial attorney and friend of Pelosi’s who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic Party candidates and causes. “When you see people like [longtime California Democratic Rep.] George Miller announcing that they are not running again, you know where the money will be going.”

They are desperate to keep Obama's shield. Obama and the senate have been guarding each other for five years to put and keep pressure on the republicans. They're always the obstructionists, they've been saying.

Yet, currently, Obama can say, "hey, the bill never got to me so I'm not responsible" and the senate can cay, "hey, Obama said he'd veto bill such and such so we're not going to even go through the motions of passing it"

But if the senate goes republican, then the only obstructionist will be Obama. And Obama must be guarded at all cost!

See what shape the GOP is in after the GOP passes amnesty.

Back when the GOP knew how to play hardball, Clinton vetoed welfare reform 3 times before he signed it into law.

Well, the senate was also republican then. But Gingrich was Speaker, and kept forcing the issue on worthless Dole’s senate, who would have been very happy to have it go away.

Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy and the rest don’t have that kind of guts, because they’ve been intentionally maneuvered into their positions. Gingrich becoming minority whip was a fluke due to circumstances at the time and the establishment has since made sure that the whole track of leadership, from committee chairmen on down are toe the line types!

I’m pretty sure they will hold both with significant majorities.

There is a silver lining here. Nazi will never be Speaker again, and that fact will maybe cause her to leave pubic office, or better still die!

They will do exactly as they did in the presidential election. That's my guess.

They will drill down into the numbers precinct by precinct. Determine just what they need to hold onto power. Find the polling areas where they can commit the most fraud unobstructed (not too hard with the GOP as an "opposition").

They will squeak out victory. 110% turn out for them in some areas, all votes going to them in some areas, blatant fraud reported...nary a peep from the other side.

"I’m pretty sure they will hold both with significant majorities."

Who, the Republicans? Likely in the House, but I think the Senate will be real close. The larger the scale of the office up for election, the more voter fraud becomes effective.

I am convinced that if the GOPe ‘owned’ Republicans got 75% of the Senate, and 75% of the House, the United States wouldn’t move one iota back to the Right.

It has moved steadily Left since Reagan, and that includes the Bush, Republican Senate, and Republican House years.

Big Left is in full control.

As I have harped on forever, the pure #s are irrelevant. If the GOP faces aren’t conservative, it’s irrelevant. That’s why I support people like Milton Wolf, a Tea Party guy, who is seeking to oust long-standing wallflower Pat Roberts in KS. Yes, Roberts has the appropriate ACA rating, but when the chips are down, he vanishes. Where was Roberts, for example, during the government shutdown?

I don’t see the GOP taking the Senate. The GOP have turned down the temp on obamacare and are now playing time wasting games with Dem issues.

The Dems will stay on message and win a few Senate races they should lose like LA. That will be enough to for them to keep the Senate.

While I don’t every put it past the GOP to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, I really think the Senate is a lost cause for the Democrats. They should probably work to minimize their losses in 2014 and try and get the Senate back in 2016.

Such a shame, what with Ginsburg sure to not make it thru 2016, the seat to go to a leftist youngin.

The GOP have turned down the temp on obamacare and are now playing time wasting games with Dem issues.

Without the GOP saying a word, support for Obamacare is plummeting. Once the wave of canceled employer based plans hits the fan, Rats are going to be running for cover.

After the Labor Day recess is time enough to crucify Rats who voted for Obamacare and who continue to defend it.
