Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republican Party in the U.S. Senate, has low ratings among voters in his native Kentucky, according to a survey released Wednesday by Public Policy Polling.
According to PPP, 37 percent approve of McConnell's performance as a senator, and 51 disapprove.
He has a one point lead, 45-44, over possible Democratic contender Alison Lundergan Grimes.
Since the estimated margin of error for the survey is plus or minus about four percentage points, the senate race is essentially even.

Kentucky Conservatives should be screaming for Bevin to get support in primary against McConnell before he blows a conservative seat
If I have to die this year, my fervent wish is to see this bastard lose in his primary along with the other RINO traitors that are up for re-election.
McConnell is an idiot. Should’ve stayed conservative.
Time for Rand Paul to start backpeddling. Fast.
Yeah...well watch him “pivot” right ....until after the election.
Was he ever conservative? Or did he just say and act like he was conservative to get elected.
Isn’t PPP essentially pro-Dem in their polling?
Kentucky is one of the few states won by Romney over Obama. It was 61-38.
To lose Kentucky a conservative has to be trying to lose. (Or must be seen as a cronyist and not a conservative....the case with McConnell)
Right now McConnell is kryptonite, but Matt Bevins has some good endorsements, and unless Paul wants to see a split Kentucky Senate, then he’s got to take a side between now and the primary.
It’s not like he owes anything to McConnell. McConnell fought for Paul’s opponent against Rand Paul tooth and nail during Paul’s campaign in Kentucky.
Given what will inevitably happen with regards to immigration, the GOP is dead.
Best for us to start devoting time to real conservatives and let the RINOs slowly rot into the slime that is democrats.
This is exactly how we are going to destroy the Republican Party and make it impossible for conservatives to ever have a significant voice again - by allowing Democrats to be elected over Republicans, even if the Republicans are RINOs. The way to defeat RINOs is to replace them with true conservatives in the primaries, not by electing Democrats!
We need to stand for Conservatives - FIRST; Republicans - second; and do everything possible to defeat Democrats / leftists / socialists!
I agree. If the GOP tries to push “comprehensive immigration (read: amnesty)” through, then the GOP is dead.
McConnell has the funds to bury Bevins, but not Grimes.
Like Romney, he’ll destroy the conservative, but then lose to the democrat.
Those polls from a year ago that had him nearly losing to a brain-addled Ashley Judd were for real.
What if he switches to Democrat?
What if he switches to Democrat?
He’s a Senator. None of them are conservative.
Would Jim Bunning have the guts to support Bevins, after McConnell ran him out of the Senate.
But you are arguing that no Republican should be challenged in the primary?
If they defeat Bevin in the the primary, they’ll lose in November. Then the GOPe will lecture Kentucky conservatives for not supporting their moderate. “The most important thing is to keep the senate,” they’ll say. Their insistence on keeping the marble mouth, lobbyists’ best friend is why they’ll lose.
Don’t worry. He has a PLAN! The plan is to pass amnesty to curry favor with illegal aliens!
Then the game the GOP is playing with us will continue forever.
Sorry, but I don’t accept any polling data from PPP as legitimate... They are a left-wing Democrat “polling” firm with a left-wing agenda and routinely skew their polls heavily in favor of Democrats.
I read the comment and knew exactly what the poster was saying.
Take the RINO out in the primary if it can be done.
And somehow, I detect that you think this is a bad idea? :-) /sarcasm.
(PPP) Pure Poppycock Polling also said that huckster was #1 amongst republican base voters and jebby bush-league is second. Cruz is around 96th. I’d believe carville before I’d believe anything PPP says... and I will NEVER believe a word that carville says.
"Democracy demands an educated and informed electorate" - Thomas Jefferson
And, to me "electorate" means those who participate in the election process. So, to paraphrase: "Democracy demands the participation of those who are educated and informed."
Not if we systematically replace RINOs in the primaries and then help get them elected.
The alternative is to allow Democrats to be elected - that would be the only thing worse than electing RINOs.
I have no idea what he is doing now or how much cachet he still has with the Kentucky GOP. Does any Kentucky Freeper know?
Disagree, my FRiend... I much prefer to have my enemies on the other team, not my own.
A lot of these RINO would rather a DEM win than a Conservative. If they lose the primary to a Conservative, they will back DEM
We heard this argument used for decades. Nothing ever improve because we always pick lessor of two evils
I agree. Better to know your enemy than to have a supposed friend stab you in the back.
PPP is Popular Front commie propaganda. This crap means either Republican wins by a margin of 8 points or more.
Goodbye to the gobbler!
Not so...early January polling by Republican firm had McConnell up by only 5. And that was down from 8 earlier.
He was slipping already.
And that’s with 8% for an independent and 13% undecided.
Agree. Pass amnesty and the GOP is dead. Tens of millions of conservatives
will leave the party. Only the RINOS will be left.
They got Jim Bunning to retire when he had numbers like this.
Unfortunately the “they” is mostly Mitch McConnell.
So “they” won’t be helpful this time.
But you don’t kill your party by passing amnesty.
Amnesty. A real party killer.
So, we would be better off if the Dems had control of the House and the Senate???
I’m sorry, but I believe the lesser of two evils is better than the worst of two evils. I don’t like it either, but until conservatives can come together enough to replace RINOs in the primaries (which means agreeing on which conservatives to rally around), we will continue to be stuck with one of the two evils.
Let him try. He will be Spectored. Mitch is only of value when he supports liberalism from the right side. They would drop him like a hot potato.
McConnell is not the lesser of two evils. He’s a traitor.
The only chance Kentucky has to keep the democrats from gaining a senate seat this fall is by choosing Bevin over McConnell in the primary. If McConnell wins the primary republican voters will stay home for the general and Lundergan-Grimes will win. If Bevin wins the primary the opposite will occur: republican voters will turn out in droves and the democrats will stay home. Rand Paul needs to read the writing on the wall and help Bevin get elected.
