Bad storm. Terrific people.
The whole country is talking about the Atlanta Ice Down, and I know you've all heard the stories of people being stuck in traffic for 11 hours. The way the story is being told, it must sound like those of us in the Southeast have no idea what to do when a few snowflakes start coming down.
But the main national stories didn’t tell the whole story about what happened.
The problem was not that two or three inches of snow fell. Believe it or not, southerners can handle driving in two or three inches of snow. The problem was that, as the snow fell, it was melting upon hitting the ground and then freezing. Throughout the day, that was turning road surfaces into ice rinks.

I worked for a company in Nashville that was just acquired by new management out of Denver. They laughed when we started closing early because of the potential of snow.
They weren’t laughing the next morning. They thought they could drive in snow. Add a bunch of hills and a layer of ice, and they figured out they weren’t as smart as they thought they were.

I live in Minnesota, and we always have problems the first snowfall of the year. People talk, around here, about how fast people forget how to drive on snow, but the truth is that the first snowfall on unfrozen roads is different.
How unusual. Snow falling on roads and then forming ice. Geez.

Agree. I’ve been driving in upstate NY for over 30 winters now. Black ice is the worst condition to drive in.

Snow turns into ice on roads. They aren't prepared for snow if they aren't prepared for ice.
We are used to it happening occasionally here in Nebraska. But sometimes there is just nothing that works. Salt it down and wind blows across and it freezes right back up. Sometimes all you can do is get off the road.
Exactly, I got the same snowstorm as Atlanta and no one can drive normally on roads that have been snowed on, the snow melted and then refrozen into a sheet of smooth, slick ice. And if that happens in a large city, you get what we saw in Atlanta.
The problem this week was that the snows started in the morning after most people had gone to work, or gone to school, or wherever. And then the streets and roads were dangerous in the afternoon when folks needed to head home, either early or at their normal time. - Of anyone had had a good weather crystal ball, everyone would have stated at home the morning the snow came.
Our snows usually come at night and melt away before noon, but this one came in the morning and stayed for two full days, and it is unusual for snow to stick around that long in most of the South.
This storm was a bit different. I drove through Charlotte at 1900hrs and the brine treatment actually made the situation worse. The initial snow melted and then refroze quickly. I-85 along with 77 was an ice rink but we didn’t get the rush hour mess Atlanta dealt with.
I made it home @30mph in triple the time. Folks were using the inside lanes and not trying to rush. I was proud of my fellow travelers on 85N.
85S was a parking lot. LOL.
Lots of snow, wind, blizzard conditions during rush hour and cold temperatures here this year in NY.
They treat the roads with salt and sand. We've had very few problems.
