PFC. LLOYD C. HAWKS, USA (MOH)
Medical Detachment, 30th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division
Near Carano, Italy, 30 January 1944

Citation:

" For gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. On 30 January 1944, at 3 p.m., near Carano, Italy, Pfc. Hawks braved an enemy counterattack in order to rescue 2 wounded men who, unable to move, were lying in an exposed position within 30 yards of the enemy. Two riflemen, attempting the rescue, had been forced to return to their fighting holes by extremely severe enemy machinegun fire, after crawling only 10 yards toward the casualties. An aid man, whom the enemy could plainly identify as such, had been critically wounded in a similar attempt. Pfc. Hawks, nevertheless, crawled 50 yards through a veritable hail of machinegun bullets and flying mortar fragments to a small ditch, administered first aid to his fellow aid man who had sought cover therein, and continued toward the 2 wounded men 50 yards distant. An enemy machinegun bullet penetrated his helmet, knocking it from his head, momentarily stunning him. Thirteen bullets passed through his helmet as it lay on the ground within 6 inches of his body. Pfc. Hawks, crawled to the casualties, administered first aid to the more seriously wounded man and dragged him to a covered position 25 yards distant. Despite continuous automatic fire from positions only 30 yards away and shells which exploded within 25 yards, Pfc. Hawks returned to the second man and administered first aid to him. As he raised himself to obtain bandages from his medical kit his right hip was shattered by a burst of machinegun fire and a second burst splintered his left forearm. Displaying dogged determination and extreme self-control, Pfc. Hawks, despite severe pain and his dangling left arm, completed the task of bandaging the remaining casualty and with superhuman effort dragged him to the same depression to which he had brought the first man. Finding insufficient cover for 3 men at this point, Pfc. Hawks crawled 75 yards in an effort to regain his company, reaching the ditch in which his fellow aid man was lying."

Good evening, Connie, and thank you for the tributes to our troops.*HUGS*

How was your commute? Any critters lately?

Mid 20s now and mid teens overnight. Now for some snow and maybe we can get back to normal.

I’ve seen those and you wonder if they were only to cover the hand. Catching looks to be hard...you needed strong fingers.

Or maybe that’s where the “two hands” issue came in....one to cradle the ball, but the other needed to cover it and keep it from falling out.

photo 208th004_zpsd91e7063.jpg The old guy on the end was my Father's best friend. He was also the oldest man in the battalion. In most photos he is seen with a pipe in his hand or mouth. The interesting thing about him is he was in prison for moon shining when the war began. He was let out to serve in the army. Daddy said he was the best engineer in the battalion despite not being able to read or write. Even the college trained engineer officers would sometimes come to him for help. He specifically mentioned when they were trying to repair a flood control dam and railroad. They could not seem to get the rails which moved to match the stationary ones. Finally they got Newton and he showed them how to do it. After the war Newton using his wife's writing and my Father wrote back and forth until he died. We went to visit them and I was too young to leave at home so went with them. I was surprised that they were the nicest people you would ever want to meet. Not at all what one would think of a criminal. He and Daddy sat in chairs under a tree and talked about old times for two solid weeks. I guess friends you make in war are ones you stay friends with.

The fires are spotty - mostly brush but still can be dangerous. The brush is kinda oily and they do burn hot. It’s the animals living in the bush that are more at risk and I go out from time to time on a rescue.

Hai! Ya, there's a cooling trend if you can call it one. We're finally below 100F and rain is here! Things should moderate now. It's the bush critters that are having a fit so I go out with crews to rescue those we find, bring them back and get them sorted out.

Thanks...home safe and sound. The main road was dry! The intersections still have ice.

My street has HUGE holes where the ice melted down to the asphalt, but you have to drive really slow for all the bumps.

How cool that you can go on critter rescues. That kangaroo looks happy to be safe.
